Carter Memorials - Riverside Cemetery, Pleasant Valley
Is there a better photograph than your Carter-Taylor-Brewster obelisk anywhere on this site? I don't think so. I hope you are collecting these - you have a book here as your photos are interesting in their own right above/beyond the factual details they convey. As for the obelisk itself, I believe it and grand stair and entire tier was paid for by the soon-to-be NY Governor, US Sec. of State and Chief Justice, Charles Evans Hughes who was both in the Carter law firm and married a Carter. This was done thirty years before the Barkhamsted flood for the reservoir which forced submerging the former cemetery for some of this family. Few know of the stolen bronze plaques of my ancestors - do you by chance have transcriptions or even images? I have never known what they said specifically - and you seem to have knowledge of this. As for Mary Ann Boyd (Jones) Carter, yes please post the photo, as the context will help even if no individual memorial exists and will also prevent future repeat photo requests. I wonder if this is therefore a cenotaph, since no individual memorial for Mary is there AND she died in Milwaukee long before. In contrast to this likely cenotaph, the family created actual individual memorials in Riverside for interments to be removed from Barkhamsted - but weren't, and were moved years later during the Depression-era Barkhamsted reservoir, to another local cemetery with all other removed interments.

I've been on that tier - you captured an interesting place on seemingly a great day.

Appreciatively, Philip in NYC
