I'll be in touch later about Hayes but if you have his birth and death dates that would be great. My email address is posted on my profile. Actually I prefer email over message boards. I have a virtual cemetery for those who were in Company A 184th Virginia. I just realized that I have never written a history for the virtual cemetery. I will plan to do that in the late winter. Their history needs to be told. You will not find anything in National Archives about this unit. What I know I found in files in the West Virginia Archives and History Library. These files are from the West Virginia Service Commission which investigated claims that soldiers had not been paid for their services.

RE: Richmond/Cemetery
That is Daniel, himself. Daniel is much like his ancestors. He can and does live off of the land. He lives in a log home he built himself from trees harvested on his own land. He has a miniature sawmill. His home looms large over many built this day and time. Very beautiful home. While he has all of the modern day amenities, he and his beautiful wife use a wood burning stove and oven to cook with. He is quite the character. I love my visits with him.

My computer was stolen, not lost. No, I did not have a back up. Actually I did have several backups but all of the devices were in the bag that my computer was in when stolen.

If memory serves me correctly, Daniel told me that Hayes lived a hobo life. I would be interested in learning what you have on Hayes.

I can understand how he came to be called Rutherford Hayes Richmond. Allen's father, Samuel Richmond, Sr., had at least one meeting with the then, Col. Hayes, during the Civil War. The Senior Richmond sought protection from the Union troops led by Hayes to protect his mill and ferry from the Confederates. Col. Hayes declined but offered to arm and give rations to a company of men that Samuel Richmond would organize. That company came to be called Company A, 184th Virginia Militia. This was a Union regiment which disbanded before WV became a state and thus Virginia Militia is what they were known as rather than WV Militia.

Someone stole my computer about 3 years ago and as a result I've lost all of my best research along with thousands of pictures. Who are the parents of Rutherford Hayes Richmond? I remember a Hayes Richmond in the line somewhere.

RE: Richmond/Cemetery
No, I am not a Richmond. I do have several twisted connections. Their colorful history fascinates me. I never will forget the first time I met Daniel Richmond, a son of Webster. I was leaving the area and driving along New River road and came upon a man riding a horse and decided to stop and talk with him to see what he might know about a grave that I was looking for. He was dressed and looked like a ghost from the 1880'swith full length duster and big floppy western hat. We talked for an hour. I've met with him many times since then. I am about 2 hours away. Sandstone, Raleigh County, is somewhat isolated. Where are you located?

RE: Richmond/Cemetery
I am referring to the elder Samuel Richmond born 1801 and bushwacked during the Civil War on 12 September 1863. He was the father of Allen T C Richmond, James Harrison Richmond, John A. Richmond, Henry A. (Tuck) Richmond, and William Caperton Richmond, all of whom rests in this Richmond Cemetery.

RE: Richmond/Cemetery
Thanks for the clarification. I have documented every marked grave within this cemetery. Cora, if she is buried there, does not have a marker. This cemetery is in the woods so to speak and probably was woodlands at one time so any unmarked graves could easily get "lost" over a long period of time. There are several spots where a grave could be but no unmarked native stone exist. I see no reason why she would not be buried there. I see that Webster Enfield Richmond was the informant and it would not surprise me if he buried her. I personally know two of Webster's sons. I can inquire about Cora and Walter the next time I visit with the sons. They may know the location of these two graves. Thank you for mentioning the name of your relative. If I may suggest, please indicate on Walter's memorial that his grave is unmarked. Same for Cora if you do a memorial for her. Also when I visited the Richmond Cemetery in the early goings of my ventures there, Allen T. C. Richmond and wife Rachel did not have headstones. I had an old map with pinpointed the grave of Allen. The two grandsons were not sure of the exact location. They also believe that Samuel Richmond is probably buried there. Knowing and studying this cemetery as I have I tend to disagree that Samuel Richmond rests there. I sure would love to know where he rests.
