I grew up in the Northwestern area of Orange County, NC. next to the Alamance, Caswell county lines. I have a number of kin buried @ Mt Zion Church. Byrd's, Florence's|
I have a number of Shepherd Kin buried in Guilford & Alamance Counties.I am currently working on linking and providing information on as many as i can. I have set up a Virtual Cemetery for the Civil War Guilford- Alamance Shepherd's . One for those that died during the war and one for the survivors of the war. Total of 32. See my Virtual Cemeteries to view it. I will add names as i find them.
I have added a short clip on the 29 Shepherd Family members who served the Confederacy.
ATTENTION: If your looking for the Surname SHEPHERD, SHEPARD, SHEPPARD & SHEPHARD in Alamance or Guilford Counties, they can all be related. A German immigrant from Pennsylvania William Schaefer or Schaeffer settled in Guilford County in or before 1775 near what is now the Guilford-Alamance county line area. Early court clerks had a hard time spelling Schaefer so it was listed as Shaver in Census and early documents. His childern used the Shaver name, but most of their childern , the third generation started using the English version, SHEPHERD. Due to lack of schooling and early grave stone makers misspelling the name, and different census takers spelling it different it started to be spelled different ways. You can find the same family's with different spelling of Shepherd.
A number of the early Guilford Shepherd's moved to Illinois and Indiana in the 1830-1870 range to take advantage of the opening of land grants by the government. Because of a lack of names of the whole family living at a house in the 1830- 1840 census records its very hard to figure out which family members that moved and who their family members are.
At this time i am not transferring any of the Guilford- Alamance Shepherds.
I enjoy listing people i have known over the years . I Hope in someway this helps people find their relatives and friends. I will be glad to add pictures for you, just email the picture and info needed.

I want to thank you for brightening my day!
I found a picture of Jerry Shepherds grave.
Jerry Shepherd is my grandfather, I am the daughter of his oldest son Stephen Shepherd. I was very young when my grandfather died, but I still love him. One thing I he would always say when he was dying is "Be A Giant Today!"

Hello, I am researching my fathers side of the family, which is the Shepherd family. My great-grandfather James Murphy Shepherd is buried at Lows Lutheran Church in Guilford County, as well as my grandfather Berris Greeson Shepherd. I have a list of ancestors,(going back to the late 1700's) that my grandfather had written in the family bible. I wondered if this would be of any hep to you in your research. Thank You for the information that you shared about the origin of the SHEPHERD name. I remember my grandfather tell- ing me that it started out as VONSHAEFFENHEIMER in Germany, was shortened to SHAFFENHEIMER, then to SHAEFFERD, which became SHEPHERD.

I will go in and transfer now. And no, I do not mind. When I create memorials that are not my people, my goal is to get them into the hands of family members.
Thank you so much for accepting these memorials!

Buried in Marionville, Missouri.
I notice you have a number of Byrd family members in your memorials. Are you connected to the Byrd family?
I have memorials for Logan Byrd 1895-1899 and Loraine Byrd 1894-1895, presumably William and Ella's children. They are buried in the same lot and have similar headstones.
If these are your people, I would be glad to transfer these memorials to you.

Maybe I can find the connection now.
|Tammy Hall Shropshire||William A Hall|
I saw your description of William A. Hall b. 2/10/1843 - d. 10/8/1924, who is buried at Union Ridge Church in Alamance County NC.
Do you have any information about his siblings or parents?
My 4th G-grandfather Jehu (Jahew) Hall 1772-1856 is buried in this cemetery. I wondered if they are related.
