I am, by profession, a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. I suppose it is the scientist in me that created this obsession I have with graveyards. I can't seem to stay away from them and living in North Carolina has just added to my addiction.
There are so many small family graveyards...some in great shape, with caretakers that care deeply for those who have left this earth. Most however are in terrible disrepair: forgotten, hidden, overgrown, and abandoned. Every time I come across an abandoned graveyard, I can't help but think about the inhabitants...who were they, what did they die of, where are they now, what about those they left behind--where are the family members who should be tending to them? Preserving the memories? Protecting the history?
Since I have no way to find the answer to those questions, I began attempting to preserve the history myself...through pictures and logs. There is something...meaningful...fulfilling about preserving history through pictures. I feel as though I am contributing to something that will out last myself. I don't know if any one will visit these graves I record after I am gone, but I do know the pictures will live on. Keeping forever, an accurate record of where, who and when...which gives me a sense of purpose...and respectfully remembers those who came before us!
