Bio and Links
Bio Photo ABOUT ME: Gina Caperton Ervin - daughter of Rohena Mackey and Bobby Jack Caperton of Fort Smith, Arkansas. I have degrees in sociology and counseling from the University of Arkansas and am fascinated with families of origin, ancestry/genealogy, European migration, early American history, and Scottish/English cultural heritage. I live in Fayetteville, Arkansas and have collaborated with my parents to document the memorials of our loved ones and ancestors.

MY CONTRIBUTIONS: The memorials that I manage are mostly those with family connections. The majority are relatives located in the Steep Hill, Cross and Douglass Cemeteries in Sebastian County, Arkansas, particularly from the Caperton/Mackey/Bugg/McAlester(McAllister)/Starnes families. Others are connected to me through my husband, David Ervin, and are located in cemeteries in Franklin County, Arkansas. Those families are primarily Ervin/Delaney/Pritchett related. However, I also documented all graves previously unrecorded in Steep Hill Cemetery in Sebastian County, Arkansas. Memorials were established for all stones located if one did not exist. Photographs were added to all existing memorials without photos. Second photographs were added to memorials if pictures taken for the full cemetery census were more clear.

The Steep Hill project was extremely time intensive but important and enjoyable. I have 12 grandparents of various lines buried at Steep Hill. With that and the cemetery originating on family land pioneered in the early/mid-1800's (William Jackson McAllister - my GGG grandfather), my interest in establishing a full-record for historical reasons was personal. In 2012, I was elected to the Steep Hill Cemetery board. Since that time, I have tried to document bios (to the greatest extent possible) on the oldest individuals buried at Steep Hill.

I am making every effort to identify and add relationship links and personal histories on the memorials I manage. I want my children, grandchildren, their children, and others to know their family roots. If you are a relative and would like to help, I WELCOME any opportunity to add information, pictures, make corrections, etc., or to transfer memorials for your additions and care if you are more closely related. I believe memorials are important records and should honor subjects to the greatest extent possible. I do not view them as territory and would never hold them in limbo (or hostage) if they can be made better. I believe it is ideal when memorials include rich content reflect the person's life, work, family, personal interests, origin and migration (if applicable). It's about the individuals being memorialized and their descendants, friends, and loved ones, not contributors. Often, the person best able to honor the individual is not me, and family ALWAYS comes first. My e-mail contact information is noted below if you would like to make contact.

Also, you can find Steep Hill Cemetery and website information with cemetery history on Facebook!

Sincerely - Gina Caperton Ervin

Sarah Boone Bullington

Hi. I just noticed that you are the conservator for my great-great grandmother, Sarah Boone Bullington! What is the likelihood of that! Blood is definitely thicker than water!

Ah, I just got it. It's because she's buried in Steep Hill. You are one very fine public servant to do all this. Thank you.

This is a very pleasant surprise.

Mollie Brothers
Hi Gina,
Would you like to me to transfer Mollie to you to manage? I'd be happy to do so if you'd like, since she is family to you, no matter how distant.

Steep Hill
I had the chance to visit Steep Hill many years ago when I first started to become interested in genealogy. My gr-grandmother was Georgianna Byrum Elliott. The family has information on her fathers service in the Civil War, he never actually served in any action for the Union. He had syphilis and there is a record from an army doctor that it was one of the worst cases he had ever seen. As a result James went blind in his old age and was assisted by his children in later life. Thank you for your dedication to the art of genealogy and the work you have done at Steep Hill

Nancy Griffith
My great greats were Thomas Jefferson and Tennessee Griffith Chronister. On their 1880 census in Hartford, Sebastian Co., AR I found Nancy living with them. Then I searched Sebastian Co., and found a Nancy Griffith buried in Steep Hill Cemetery in Fort Smith with the report coming from the funeral home and being given by J N Griffith. She was 75 and this would make her be born in 1810. I had her being born in 1814 or 1815 in GA. They had 2 sons, one dying at age 3 and one reported as being killed in a barber shop in Poteau with no details. Simon had a brother William Riley and I don't have burial facts on him but he was reported to have died in 1870. Martha Griffith is buried in Hall Cemetery in Poteau. It is a puzzle. I put Nancy's site in my tree until I find out the facts. Thank you for answering.

John Henry Griffith
Do you know anything about his parents? I am searching for Jonathon Griffith born to Simon Monroe Griffith in LeFlore County, OK. He was reportedly shot in a barber shop in Poteau in a case of mistaken identity. First sibling born 1865 and last sibling born 1883. Mother Nancy Griffith is in this cemetery. She was married to Seth Griffith b. 1811 in TN. The census states she was born in GA. I have no information on Jonathon except first name and death information. Jeri Brock #47347716
