Fav Quote - In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors, 'You have a wonderful family; you would be proud of us.' How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say.

It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do. It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that the fathers fought, and some died to make and keep us a nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us.

Hi Jo,

I've added this record 169255626 (and two other siblings)

These children are buried 13km away from William and Ellen Smith. Their ages suggest they could be the parents of the three children. Whats your thoughts?

Regards
Mark

Thanks for your reply. I will enjoy wandering around anyway!
I have made note of half a dozen headstones, will look for those and hope mine is in the same area. I am hoping that block one at the Maple St end is the oldest bit - although it never works that way!

Bunnythorpe Cemetery
I am looking for the grave of my 2x great grandfather, who is buried in the Bunnythorpe Cemetery. He died on 18/12/1897 and was buried there on 20/12/1897, attending was the Lutheran Pastor, Mr Christenson.

As I will be travelling down to Bunnythorpe this weekend, are you able to tell me where in the cemetery I could start looking for a grave from this period.

I am aware that there may be no headstone but it would be nice to photograph the general vicinity. I do have an aerial map of the cemetery which shows the rows etc.

I wonder whether this grave belongs to the fifth great grandfather of my husband. Do you have any additional information...or is thre likely to be more information at St Stephen's Church? Thanks for your work!

McDonell history
Jo, thanks very much for direecting me to the right place and the photo which I have credited to you. This is what I have written. If any of this is wrong - please let me know. Also if you can add anything that would be great!

Baldwin left the hotel in 1865 and the lease went to Cumberland Reed Scott McDONELL (also spelled McDonnell but McDonell is correct), and his wife Marjorie (Cameron) whom he had married in 1858. McDonell was Scottish, being born in Inverness. He immigrated to Australia in the early 1850ís possibly to the goldfields, settling in Victoria for a few years before coming to Wanganui. He later had hotels in Bulls and Turakina.
