Interested in family history and the history of O'Hara Township for many years, I am a stockholder of Greenwood Cemetery, on the Board of Managers, secretary to the Board of Managers and historian for Greenwood Cemetery in O'Hara Township, Allegheny County PA, near Pittsburgh. Both my mother and I grew up while living in the old brick McPherson farm house within the cemetery limits. |
I have translated the church records of the Etna Congregational Church out of the original books written in German script, and also done a translation of the Sharpsburg Evangelical Lutheran Church record books.
In 1981 I worked with Sheri Ihrman to gather all of the records left for the Pine Creek Presbyterian Church in Fox Chapel, including a tombstone reading for the small cemetery.
The records of Greenwood Cemetery have been entered into a card file in the office, but misfiling and mistakes in the record books have made this an imperfect tool for research. It is my hope to correct the mistakes by entering every interment in Find A Grave after reviewing all the cemetery records and comparing them to the SSDI and local church records. The main list of facts for all memorials will be the burial permits filled out by the local funeral home. These may contain dates of birth which need to be confirmed, but were the best information available at the time of death. Please remember that ages given on the permits were taken from anyone able to give information, and that sometimes the info was well off the mark, both too young or too old. The SSDI is a good guide, but not necessarily correct. From 1918, many of our "residents" were from the City of Pittsburgh. New information from the just released PA death certificates is being added to all interment info and the Find A Grave memorials. This is a long process, so please be patient.
Within reason, I will add information to the posted memorials in Freeport and Greenwood from your family tree. Please try to send some reference to a document or other proof that you have the correct person. Many people have a name duplicate to others within Greenwood. Any inquiries about additional information on any of the memorials here can be sent to me, although I try to include as much as possible when constructing a memorial.
Before adding any memorial to Greenwood, please consider that a much newer cemetery named Greenwood Memorial is also in the Pittsburgh area. We very often get inquiries about people who are in that cemetery.
Everyone deserves to be remembered. A tombstone is one way their memory can endure, so I would like to preserve those monuments of their time on earth.

thank You Diane. I have been doing this for a while and I know it is tough. but with finding the graves in Pine Creek cemetery, I feel there should be some records somewhere.
I appreciate anything you can find. I don't know who James Campbell was. I don't think he was related to Alexander but who knows. should there be records somewhere?
thank You so much. Joanne

My great great Grandfather is Alexander Campbell of Fox Chapel. I have been there and have pictures of the graves.
Ann Campbell Hodil was my Great Grandmothers sister.
Alexander Campbell of Fox Chapel had two sons, Hugh and Robert and many daughters two of which were Ann Campbell Hodil and Sarah Eleanor Campbell Neal, my Great Granmother. My mother was raised by her grandmother
Sarah and told that we are related to the Alexander Campbell
Of Bethany W.V. I have done much research through the years and feel I need to find out who my GGGrandfathers, father was to go on. where would I find that? Are there archives that would show this? I appreciate anything you would direct me to or be able to find. thank You so much

Diane, I really didn't expect you to post the SSDI information. I was sending that to you for proof of her last name.

Ok. Are you saying that I can. If I can add it I can certainly do that. I thought I had to go through you.
