I've decided to change my profile on a recent suggestion. I thought Bio (short for biography) meant just that, but I must have been wrong. Besides, maybe it's time to clear up some misconceptions.|
I am replacing the "bio" with a mission statement, and that it is to document not only relatives but as many of the deceased as possible buried in the five Taunton Catholic Cemeteries. St. Joseph, St. Francis, St. James, Father Wilson's and if we can find it, Fr. Roach's
This project would not be possible without the dedicated and super help from Deanne at the cemetery office and the great staff at both the Taunton Historical Society and Taunton Public Library and other submitters who are working as a team now.
I also thank the people who have relatives buried in these cemeteries, who I have been conversing via e-mail and public messages. Only one negative response out of 145 messages and many e-mails. That's super!
And let's not forget the dedicated grounds staff of the cemeteries. The Taunton Catholic Cemeteries has a great crew in keeping the cemeteries clean, manicured and in shape.
I'm only related through marriage to maybe 20-30 people buried in these cemeteries, but over the course of finding their "bios" which is kind of limited to their obituaries, it is easy to get attached to them. A lot of interesting Tauntonians, a lot of great stories.
Of course the real reason to document is to honor the deceased by keeping their memories alive on websites such as findagrave and ancestry.
As Mary Anne Evans 22 Nov 1819-22 Dec 1880 the English novelist who wrote under the male pen name of George Eliot, quoted
"Our dead are never dead to us until we have forgotten them"
After reading other contributor's bios, I am amazed at some of the numbers of entries. I see a lot of claims of photo ownership along with the "please do not copy" statements. Please respect their wishes.
But anyone is free to download any photo or entry I submit for their own personal use. In fact, since the size of the photos is reduced to fit on findagrave, if anyone wants the original 5MB photo, just ask and I'll send it e-mail. And if anyone is dissatisfied with any picture I post, let me know and I will attempt a retake. Just remember, I'm not a professional photographer. Some of the stones are worn and some of the highly polished ones are hard to photograph if the sun angle is not right. Photo method suggestions are welcome.
And of course, lookup requests (in the Taunton Catholic Cemeteries only please) will be attempted to be fulfilled.
All Taunton (Massachusetts)Daily Gazette death notices and obituaries prior to 2004 were trasnscribed from microfilmed copies kept at the Old Colony Historical Society 66 Church Green, Taunton, MA 02780 (508) 822-1622
