I'm a retired educator, the official County Historian & Archivist, Pres. of the 400 member Polk County Historical & Genealogical Society, founder/editor of the PCHGS Quarterly, and the History of Polk County, and 4 day a week volunteer at the little genealogy library I established here in Benton 18 years ago. I'm the former heritage columnist for the local newspaper, the 'Polk County News', and help numerous people to 'find their Grandpa'!|
Although I am not related to the majority of families whose memorials, pictures, or bios I post, I do maintain a lot of them on behalf of close family members who do not 'do' Internet. We have fairly large family files, pictures, and obituaries and I love to share those as I have time. And anyone is welcome to use the bio info and pictures, both markers and people, that I add.
My basic family surnames are Ansel and Rutha Tipton Bailey from Buncombe County, North Carolina; Revolutionary War Patriot Col. William Porter who fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain and was in the NC Legislature for many years after the War (wife Mary Gilkey); The Holdens, Garrisons, and Owenbys from NC to Fannin County, Georgia; and John M. and Jane Ann Rogers Griffith, NC to GA.
Hubby James' side of the family is Jonathan Presswood, Esybous Maynor, Womac, Buckner, Clayton, William and Sophia Moore Dennis, and the 'brick wall' we all have, Harrison and Thaney Clayton Hughes. Harrison married 2nd Elmira Silcox in Polk Co. TN then moved to Arkansas by 1880 with his 2nd family, Price, Burt, Lafayette, Byrum and Sis.

oh my!!! Fixed it fast! Thank you for contacting me :)
|Frances Rogers||Re: Stephen Morgan Bailey|
Thanks for bringing the error to my attention! I must have been thinking the NC 3rd was Confederate troops instead of checking it out. I've deleted the tribute and added a different one entirely. Looks like I led someone else to post one a Confederate flag, too. I appreciate you taking the time to set me straight because I especially don't like making mistakes on here. Merry Christmas!

|Clinton Slayton||Thomas T Russell (# 85714941)|
Marian, greetings from Lexington. I never got notice that my article about Hampton Slatton appeared in your Polk Co newsletter, did it ever get in?
The image you supplied for Thomas T Russell at # 85714941 is my son's cousin:
Thomas Theodore Russell and Daniel Bailey Slayton are 1st cousins 3 times removed. Their common ancestor is Sam (Older)/William Samuel "Sampson" Branum.
There were two Sam Branums, one in Knox and one in Bradley, and both mar Elizabeths. Gwendolyn Russell, Thomas T's dau, and I are trying to untangle this mess.
This is from Bailey's mother's side, so there is evidence that Sam Branum and Wm H H Slatton were both b abt 1842 between Campbell Co Tn and Polk/Bradley. Wm H H father moved to GA/N AL, as did some of the Branums, and so all were near Chattanooga in the early 1900s.

I saw you have a picture on here of Elias Kilpatrick. I'm descended from his daughter Jane Coleman. I was wondering if you have more pictures of the Kilpatricks and Colemans. Please shoot me a message at firstname.lastname@example.org if you can. Thanks!

|Inga McCoy||Porters of Buncombe NC|
My name is Inga McCoy and I live in Wyoming. I am researching some of my North Carolina ancestors. My third great grandmother was Mary Porter (born around 1811). She married David Rufus Stroupe (1809-1880). One of their sons was my second great grandfather, Solomon Rufus Stroupe (1853-1922). I am wonder if the Mary Porter in my tree is related to your Porter family? I do not know who Mary Porter's parents were. I also cannot find a marriage certificate for Mary and David. However, I found death certificates for several of their children which lists their mother as being Mary Porter.
I would love to hear from you when you get a chance. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org
