Hello,

I would like to talk to you about Brock. I am with the Barton County Historical Society in Lamar. We have a farm home here in Lamar that was said to have built by him around 1866. Would love to exchange any information about him and his family. Thanks

RE: USS Enterprise virtual
I added him to my virtual cemetery. Thank you.

My grandfather was QM1 in the Navy and served on the Enterprise throughout most of the war. As quartermaster one of his duties was to go into Admiral Halsey's cabin each day and wind the clocks. One day an armed Marine (possibly your relative?? smiles) wouldn't let my grandfather in the cabin. So, he went about his other duties only to be called to the cabin later by a half-dressed Admiral asking how he was supposed to run a war if he didn't know what time it was. After grandpa explained he didn't have any further difficulties be allowed into the cabin. Hehe.

These kinds of stories are nice to hear as it shows a lighter side of what was a horrible war for these men.

Fortunate for the Enterprise, it was not in Harbor that day. They were in fact heading in and were radioed to turn around and return to sea. Grandpa told about having to change course, as steering the ship was his main responsibility. He often told about the kamikazes which would aim for the control tower (his station) as that was the best way to sink or disable a ship. He had to stand his post. He stuttered as he told these stories. He is my hero.

RE: Photo for Elizabeth Royster Overby
Hi Sharon,

I don't know anyone personally who might do that sort of thing but the next time I go to Clarksville I'll make some inquiries. The young man who lives close by and took me to the cemetery said that he had thought about trying to clean it but hadn't for some reason. His last name was Wilkerson and he works for the City of Clarksville I believe. Getting some of those stones reset will be a major job. He tried to turn one over the day I was there and it didn't move at all. When I find out something, I'll be in touch.

RE: Photo for Elizabeth Royster Overby
Hi Sharon,

I just sent you an e-mail with the picture you requested...I'll be glad for you to use it. I hate to tell you but that cemetery needs some major work. I didn't see the stone for Ann Overby at all. It must be covered with leaves or grass. I'm pretty sure Peter's stone has fallen because I remember one face down on the ground shaped like the one in your photo. As you go in the gate, it was over toward the far right corner toward the back. Also the big stone with all the names on it has fallen. A nice young man who lives close by took me to the cemetery in his truck.

Are you looking for anything else in the area? I live in Roxboro, NC and go up to Clarksville quite often so maybe I could help you in some way.

Anna Yancy Overby
I wanted to thank you for the photo of the grave of Anna Yancy Overby

though I wonder if a close-up would give more detail.
obviously the marker is in bad condition - but I wonder if you could obtain a photo that was easier to read - or if you could read and transcribe word for word the writing on the marker.

Thanks

Yes you have my permission to use the photos any way you wish. Katie was my best friend from little on up. We see Barbara from time to time but haven't seen Elaine since her wedding shower. Hope she is doing well with her practice. Wondering if they have children now? Beverly Jobe
