I currently live in central Indiana but was born in north central Ohio. I am currently researching the Brokaw/Bercaw, Baldinger, Durtsche/Durtschi, Haas/Haase, Rognan/Rognon, Larrison, Barker, Warrick, Powell, Weis, Fix(x), Egner, Stokey, Stocker, Volz, Steffey, Bortner and Harsh lines of my family tree (FindaGrave has helped a ton!). |
Family members have my permission to privately use my photos of the grave markers of your ancestors for genealogical purposes on sites such as Ancestry.com or Rootsweb.com, but not for posting elsewhere on Find A Grave, the internet, or for commercial use without express consent.
Please be patient when contacting me via email. I check my inbox about once a week, but I always open 'find a grave' email first. I will make any changes/corrections to memorials as soon as possible.
If you would like to request a memorial transfer, via 'edit', please let me know your relation to the person. Most memorials that I have set up are my relatives.
I appreciate any additional facts that you would like to share. :) Thank you.
***in the past (as a newbie) I may have set up memorials in a 'same name' but 'different place' cemetery, or cemetery location was unknown at the time. I will NOT delete a memorial I have set up (unless one was created BEFORE mine), but I will UPDATE the cemetery location. Sometimes cemetery locations on death certificates, or obituaries aren't correct or more than one cemetery with the same or similar name is located within the same county. Thank you.
****also researching my husbands family tree-- Schreck, Gelsanliter, Shumaker, Smith, Purkepile, Earl, Marett, Holden, Bliss, Spicer, Wyatt, Coulliard, Browning, Boyd, Penix, Martin, Bush, Frank, Steffey, Bortner, Prather, Covert, Osborn, Allen, Ward, Baldridge, Hite, Mollett, Blevins, Stapleton, Mills and Price.

I made a mistake in my information sent to you regarding Nelson Black's F-A-G page. He doesn't have a brother William. It was his son who was a William.

Glad I could be of help. Thanks for the link to the photo of the grave.
|Richard Rieck||#103775036 Joseph Stokes|
While en route overland to California in 1850, Lemuel Herbert wrote in his diary on July 1, "Today we overtook Dr. White's party, which had been detained by Mr. Stokes, of Marion, O., who is very ill, the result of the stinging of a poisonous insect in [the] night. His head and neck are fearfully swollen, almost out of human shape, and no doubt he will die." On July 2, he wrote "Mr. Stokes is no better. Poor fellow, he is near the end. We had to go and leave his party." At the time Herbert was on the Bear River in Idaho near Thomas Fork River about one mile west of the Wyoming state line or 10-15 miles southeast of present-day Montpelier, Idaho.
Another traveler, John Bailhache, wrote in his overland diary on July 9, "Passed 1 grave I. Stokes, from Marion, Ohio Died July 4, '50." Bailhache saw the grave at the same location described by Herbert, so Stokes did die and was buried there.
Because of the same family name, year of death, and hometown, it seems very likely that the Stokes who died on the trail was Joseph. The letters "I" and "J" are commonly confused by diary transcribers so that could explain the difference in initials.
Travelers who died in the wilderness far from California or the Missouri River were buried where they fell (as confirmed by Bailhache). If there is a marker in Marion it must be a cenotaph or memorial marker as the Stokes remains are still in Idaho, although a marker in Marion might make it appear he was moved to Ohio.
Can you confirm that there actually is a marker for him in Marion, or is there simply a notation in the cemetery records?

I was thinking about the teacher in the Bucyrus, Ohio named Jean Mack.
She was my mentor when I began teaching in view Cyrus in 1975. When I put her name in Google this entry showed up.
She was a wonderful woman and teacher.
It is do great to make these connections! Please feel free to use any of the photos I have on my Ancestry.com tree. If you have looked, you have seen that I only have grainy photocopies of John and Martha Schreck family members. If you have better quality pictures I would love to use them. Better to reach me via e-mail as I now check find a grave only periodically. I'm at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thanks for being in touch, Jackie.
