Bio Photo I strive for Quality, not Quantity

Historian and genealogist.

I have been doing genealogy on both sides of the Atlantic for over 27 years. My work on Find A Grave is NOT a hobby, but a service to others.

I majored in history at Duke Univ., did graduate work in history at the Univ. of South Carolina, graduated from the Univ. of Florida Law School and practiced law for 30 years, much of it in the land title industry. I have an EFM certificate from the School of Theology, University of the South.

Through my mother, I am a ninth generation member of the Weybright (sometimes spelled Waybright) Family in America, a member of the First Families of Ohio and a direct descendant of Capt. Martin Weybright III, of the Lancaster County (PA.) Militia. who is on the DAR patriots list and paradoxically was a member of the pacifist German Baptist Brethren (Church of the Brethren). His father, Martin II and grandparents, Martin I and Margaretha, had arrived in Philadelphia in 1730 from Germany aboard the ship Loyal Judith and settled in Lancaster.

My grandfather, W E Durr, M.D. practiced in Glencoe, Ohio, from after World War I until his death in 1947. In the course of his practice, he delivered many babies, including my mother and one of my brothers. I have over 1,300 of his Physician's Birth Records, but there are probably many more records that I do not have. I put these birth records into 4 spiral bound books and gave the original books to the Ohio Genealogical Society's Library in Mansfield, Ohio, gave one copy to the Genealogical Section of the Hutton Library in Barnesville, Ohio, and kept one copy for myself.

Through my great grandfather, Cornelius "Neal" Rice (1844-1933), I am a member of Civil War Families of Ohio. During Sherman's March to the Sea, he was captured at Irwin's Crossroads, Georgia, taken to the county courthouse/jail in Sandersville and then to the county jail in Milledgeville, then the state capital of Georgia. He escaped from the jail and walked home to Greenville, Ohio.

Through my father, I am a first generation American and a dual citizen of the USA and the Republic of Ireland.

Names in my family tree are: Calvert, Varty, Moore, Durr. Rice, Burgan, Weybright or Waybright, Koontz, Fetter, Mehring and lots more.

Places in my tree are Stuart and Bradenton, Florida; Belmont, Darke, Miami, Montgomery, Holmes & Wayne counties, Ohio; Ohio County, West Virginia; Carroll County, Maryland; Lancaster, Somerset & Adams counties, Pennsylvania; Suffolk, Norfolk, Middlesex, Worcester & Plymouth counties Massachusetts; Counties Armagh, Antrim, Down, Dublin & Monaghan, Ireland; the West Riding of Yorkshire, England; Southern Germany, and more.

Denominations in my tree include: Episcopal, Christian Science, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Methodist, Moravian, German Baptist Brethren (today's)Church of the Brethren}, Roman Catholic, etc.

Places I've lived, worked or spent time in are Manatee, Alachua, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie & Indian River counties, Florida; Suffolk, Norfolk, Middlesex, Worcester & Plymouth counties, Massachusetts; Belmont, Darke, Montgomery & Erie counties, Ohio; Rutland County, Vermont; Chautauqua County, New York; Durham County, North Carolina; Richland & Sumter counties, South Carolina; Counties Armagh, Antrim, Down, Dublin & Monaghan, Ireland; London, England; etc.

Requests to other editors:

Please use the EDIT function on a specific memorial for ALL MESSAGES, requests, TRANSFERS, DUPLICATES, etc. concerning a particular memorial. DO NOT LEAVE A MESSAGE ON THIS PAGE FOR SUCH THINGS.

Transfers, I am flexible on transfers. For a transfer request please use the Edit button on the memorial, then Suggest and state your relationship, if any, etc; this is the only way I'll handle it; otherwise your requests will go unanswered. Don't use the message board below for such things pertaining to a specific memorial.

ALSO, please do not keep sending me proposed changes that I have already declined, UNLESS you have proof to back up the change.

All Messages and requests to me should be civil and polite. No sarcasm please!

Remember please that Find A Grave serves the general public, not just genealogists. Please don't send me corrections with gen speak shorthand in them (for example, s/o, m/i/l, mil, gggf, etc). Please spell them out.

Please do not assume that spouses are buried in the same cemetery, especially when their deaths are greatly separated in time and location.

Before starting a new cemetery: be sure to check to make sure the cemetery does not already exist.

Biographical information and obituaries should not be included in a virtual flower.

Think outside the box.

Please do not ask me to add unsubstantiated / unsourced claims that the person is related in some way to a famous person.

If you ask me to add info from the photo of a grave marker, especially an old one, please give me the exact dates, etc., that you want added, so that I am spared having to try to decipher the marker.

Transfer requests should be individual and specific and must be made by using the EDIT function on the memorial in question. If you are requesting a transfer based on relationship, please state that relationship and your full name. I am flexible on your connection to the person and will make transfers outside the guidelines at my discretion. I have been disappointed when I did make a transfer and the transferee did nothing to improve the memorial or even worse deletes what I have added.

No triangulated transfers. A triangulated transfer is when A asks for B to be transferred to C.

NAME PREFIXES: If a person has more than one prefix, please add the most significant one, e.g. If a person served as a private for a few years and practiced medicine for 30 or 40 years, the prefix "Dr." would be more significant than the prefix "Pvt."

RE: Koontz Photograph
Are you directly related to Louisa Catherine Menchey Koontz? Or do you know someone who is a descendant who you could put me in touch with?

RE: Transfer

transfer of Wilma Williams #157447594
I am Wilma's daughter. I didn't see where I could request a transfer on the EDIT page. I am asking her to be transferred to me if possible. What do I need to do?

RE: Koontz Photograph
Hello, I added the photo. "Annie Koontz's Mother" is written on the back of this photo, but I think your Anna A (Mehring) Koontz is a little too old, since this photo is probably from 1870-1880s. I think it may be a photo of Louisa Catherine Menchey Koontz (1830 - 1908) who had a daughter named Annie.. What do you think?

Koontz Photograph
I have a photograph labeled "Annie Koontz's mother." I was hoping to find a relative to help me identify the photograph. If you give me an email address, I can send you a digital image of the photo. I would appreciate any help you could provide.
Thank you,
Melissa Caples

RE: Jane DeBarbere
No problem. Interesting, your family history. Have Irish ancestors in same area. Just noticed one of your friends is Cheri Lauerman Vanden Berg. Do you know her personally? We are closely related through our ancestors in Poland :)

Jane DeBarbere
Finally, 2 of us walked and walked and walked the cemetery, called, got plot number, finally found under many leaves. Maybe from tornadoes the other day. Just an FYI, in the book at the church that I called, her last name was listed with an S at the end. Plot bought in early 1970s. Headstone no S.
