Elizabeth Childress Overby
I am trying to find Elizabeth Childress Overby tombstone. She was married to John Overby. Her birth is 1790 in Mecklenburg Va. Do not know the date of her death. They were married June 11 1804 I have read where she is buried in the Overby Family Cemetery. If you could find her tombstone and post a picture I sure would appreciate it. I am also looking for their son Peter William Overby

Benjamin Carpenter, #19564651
Justin,
On July 28, 1852, "John Clark of Virginia", while traveling overland to California, noted in his diary that he saw the grave of -- Carpenter, who had died in 1852 before July 28 and was from Columbus, Ohio. At that time Clark was about 14 miles east of the California Trail on the Salt Lake Cutoff in Idaho. This point is roughly 25 miles southeast of present-day Oakley, Idaho. (Listing "home" as the nearest large town instead of a smaller town is very common in overland diaries.)

On November 1, 1852, Peter Decker, of Columbus, Ohio, noted in his overland diary to California that "Benj. Carpenter died 160 miles this side [i.e., west] of Salt Lake of an abs[c]ess." This distance west of Salt Lake is the same location that John Clark recorded.

Because it is 600 miles to California from that point it was impossible to carry the body in a slow-moving wagon across the desert in the summer heat. The fact that Clark also saw a grave for Carpenter indicates that he was buried in Idaho. Overwhelming transportation problems means that the body was never recovered at a later date.

When families back home received the sad news of a trail death they often erected a cenotaph or memorial marker in the local cemetery in honor the deceased. Such markers are quite common in the east. Over the generations the knowledge that the marker is a cenotaph was lost and to a modern observer it appears that the deceased is buried in the east, when, in fact, they still are buried alongside the trail. The two photos of the marker on Find A Grave are, almost certainly, of a cenotaph, not an actual grave.

Thought you might be interested.

Sally Fisk Pool
According to gravestone, she was 37 years old and died in 1818. This would put her birth year as 1781.

Memorial #18965042 Orville Edward Overby
Hi. I'm updating the burial listing for Harmony Cemetery from the Graves Co KY Cemetery Book 1, and came across your posting Memorial #18965042 for Orville Edward Overby. He is listed on the Harmony Cemetery listing with his 1st wife Berdie Opal Fuqua and his 2nd wife Myrtle Dill. Can you tell me where you got the information he married Carline? Just curious about this bit of information on a 3rd wife.
Looking forward to hearing back from you.
Thanks, Shirley :)

Hello, Justin --

Thanks for posting this info. David and Sally are my gggg parents. I have her maiden name as Nourse -- from another researcher.

Do you have documentation that it should be Fisk?
