A native-born resident of Marshall, Texas, I have begun researching my family's gravesites in the surrounding areas. From Avinger to Upshur County to sites all over Marshall and towns in and around Harrison County.
I have walked and photographed markers in and around Harrison County at many of the cemeteries. My goal is to walk, locate, and record them all. I try to locate and add GPS coordinates every so often at the around 200 cemeteries in our county; I have even had funeral homes ask me to help them locate burial sites. If the markers are legible, I have photographed them and added them on here if missing. More get added all the time, and I try to stop and check for new ones now and then.
I have found hidden and lost cemeteries in Harrison County (that the county records do not even show exist) and added them to this website, like more recently Saint Marks/Carver and Cornerstone in the Harleton area, Pace Memorial Garden in the Hallsville area, and Elizabeth Cemetery in eastern Harrison County near Leigh. I am trying to gather info on Harrison County cemeteries that have incorrect directions or none and locate them so they accurately appear on the Maps tab; if you know where a cemetery is but can not get to it, let me know! Batts Cemetery is one of my newest attempts at finding the exact location.
* GPS coordinates for Sipps Cemetery, Love Cemetery, and Bluff Springs Cemetery in Harrison County TX added recently.
I want the memorials for cemeteries in my area, and that my family are in, to be as complete as possible for future generations.
Please use the 'Edits' tab to submit changes or request a transfer, not through 'Messages'.
If you have your messages disabled or your email is not available, please do not leave me an odd edit request. If I cannot contact you to verify sources or if I have a question, your edit may be declined. Reasonable changes are rarely questioned.
Also per Findagrave guidelines, I will not add an obituary, or link to an obituary, to a memorial without permission from the original media publisher/newspaper/website. Just stating where you got your information is not legally binding as getting permission to republish that information.
Bluff Springs Cemetery The Bluff Springs Cemetery is not an easy one to find. Once you get to the old logging road there is a locked gate. The best person to contact is Sam Satterfield at 903.663.1729 or 903.663.2456, or his brother Mike at 903.663.4397. They are the executors over the property.
Let me know if you have any issues. I'll be glad to help any way I can. It's a beautiful cemetery with lots of history. Sam and Mike may refer you to Jack Simmons and if so Jack is full of knowledge concerning Bluff Springs.
RE: Douglass Rivers Hunt Sr. Yes, if you wouldn't mind requesting that this grave is in an unknown location. Since he died during the last days of the Civil War, it could be that his body is buried on a battlefield or in some other state. It would take some research to see what the battlefield records say. Some of these are very detailed. If it turns out that his body was returned to Marshall, Find A Grave records can reflect this. Thank you, Irby
Douglass Rivers Hunt Sr. Bill: Douglass Rivers Hunt, Sr. is listed as buried at Grange Hall Cemetery. However I find no record of him being buried there. He died May 4, 1864 which is before any recorded graves were at Grange Hall. His wife is at the Marshall Cemetery. Is it possible that his body never made it back to Harrison County? Perhaps "Georgia Girl" has more information. Thanks Irby Connery
Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church Hey Bill I want to thank you so much for posting all of the graves at Mount Olive. It's my family cemetery and I was so glad to see my 4th GG Gilbert Turner, Uncle Peter Sanders, and several other family members. My Uncle Peter wife Laura is buried there and as well as my 3rd GG Johnson Simmons were there graves that didn't have headstones or any plates letting you know that someone was buried there. How long did it take you to do that? Next time I go to Louisiana I'm going to do another walk through the cemetery. Again Thank you so much it made my day.
Avinger Cemetery, Cass County, TX Hi. I am Elaine McCoy Martin and I manage the Cass County TXGenWeb site. I would like to get as many cemeteries transcribed and online as I can so it will be of help to our fellow researchers who cannot visit the actual cemetery. Would you consider giving me permission to use the photos you have for Avinger Cemetery and any other Cass County cemeteries you may have? You would be given full credit for the photographs, along with my humble thanks!
