A native-born resident of Marshall, Texas, I have begun researching my family's gravesites in the surrounding areas. From Avinger to Upshur County to sites all over Marshall and towns in and around Harrison County. |
I have walked and photographed markers in and around Harrison County at many of the cemeteries and want the information to be as complete as possible for future generations. My goal is to walk, locate, and record them all. I try to locate and add GPS coordinates every so often at the around 200 cemeteries in our county; I have even had funeral homes ask me to help them locate burial sites. If the markers are legible, I have photographed them and added them on here if missing. More get added all the time, and I try to stop and check for new ones now and then.
I have found hidden and lost cemeteries in Harrison County (some that the county and state records do not even show exist) and added them to this website, like Saint Marks/Carver and Cornerstone in the Harleton area, Pace Memorial Garden in the Hallsville area, and Elizabeth Cemetery in eastern Harrison County near Leigh. I am trying to gather info on Harrison County cemeteries that have incorrect directions or none and locate them so they accurately appear on the Maps tab; if you know where a cemetery is but can not get to it, let me know! Batts Cemetery is one of my newest attempts at finding the exact location.
I recently finished photographing all of Mount Olive Cemetery in Greenwood, LA.

If you have your messages disabled or your email is not available, please do not leave me an odd edit request. If I cannot contact you to verify sources or if I have a question, your edit may be declined. Reasonable changes are rarely questioned.
Also per Findagrave guidelines, I will not add an obituary, or link to an obituary, to a memorial without permission from the original media publisher/newspaper/website. Just stating where you got your information is not legally binding as getting permission to republish that information.

Ok. Well, the offer remains. If you ever need some help, just let me know.

I've noticed your name all over findagrave, and now I know why! I recently started looking for headstones for out of state folks. Just wanted to offer my help if you would like to "divide and conquer" here in Harrison county. I work shift work, so my schedule allows me to have a lot of time off during the week. I appreciate the goal of documenting all the sites and want to be a part of that. Contact me at email@example.com or here if you are interested.

Can you find and add birthplace and deathplace to his memorial.
Steve Lawless (Grandson of Robert N. Howell and Ada Singleton)
Also, could you obtain photos for Geneva and Wanda and post on their memorials.

Good Morning Bill,
Thank you so much and yes I know there are a lot of unmark and broken headstones there. My cousin LM Simmons have no clue where his grave is there. The thing that makes me sad is when I wrote the church and asked did they keep records of everyone that's buried there and I received no response. When I also asked family members they couldn't never answer me so through your hard work I will put together the pieces and go from there. Thanks again.
|Jo M||Haggard Memorials in Hallsville Cemetery|
Thanks for your notification that my memorials for Robert V. Haggard & wife Annie Hill Haggard were duplicates of memorials that you had created. I am happy to see the updated information (names, family relationships, etc.) on your memorials. I connect to this family both through my step-father & my biological father. In short, my dad's bro married my step-dad's sis. I grew up in Hallsville & Longview. Happy to see the Haggard memorials. Earlier in searches, no listings of memorials in the Hallsville Cem. database for a Robert Sr & wife Annie Louise would show. I have now deleted the two duplicates. Thanks Jo (Horner)M.

|Brynda Hennings||Bluff Springs Cemetery|
The Bluff Springs Cemetery is not an easy one to find. Once you get to the old logging road there is a locked gate. The best person to contact is Sam Satterfield at 903.663.1729 or 903.663.2456, or his brother Mike at 903.663.4397. They are the executors over the property.
Let me know if you have any issues. I'll be glad to help any way I can. It's a beautiful cemetery with lots of history. Sam and Mike may refer you to Jack Simmons and if so Jack is full of knowledge concerning Bluff Springs.

Yes, if you wouldn't mind requesting that this grave is in an unknown location. Since he died during the last days of the Civil War, it could be that his body is buried on a battlefield or in some other state. It would take some research to see what the battlefield records say. Some of these are very detailed.
If it turns out that his body was returned to Marshall, Find A Grave records can reflect this.
