Retired university teacher and librarian with interest in Civil War burials and burial practices. Also undertaking to photograph all cemeteries in Erath County, TX, and surrounding counties, then to enter the tombstone information into the database. Many older tombstones are in such shape as to be illegible, so corrections to bad or missing biographical information is welcomed. |
Please make requests for additions, corrections, links, etc., directly from the memorials' "edit" feature rather than here. I'll get to them much faster. (Transfers to direct descendants, please, and not in bulk lots!)

I am a direct descendant of J. W. Collier and Nannie W. Collier. Would like site transfered to me so I can perform linkage between family and add photos.
Best regards, Russell Long #48306241
|Ptolemy||Grave of Juan de Leon|
I am doing a research paper on births and deaths in the Big Bend prior to World War II and am using a picture of Juan de Leon's grave that was taken ca. 1980. I looked up any information on him that might be available on ancestry.com and found your pictures and accompanying information.
I am very impressed that you have new pictures of the grave, that is still maintained and now with a new cross that contains his name and a date of birth and death. I am amazed it is still maintained as he did not leave any descendants that I know of at his death. I am surprised you found it given its remote location in the Graham Pasture in Big Bend National Park.
The father of a present prominent local official worked as an exploited child in a candellia plant in the area of de Leon's death around the time of World War II. (He did not start school until he was age 18 as a result). He is familiar with the grave and told me that the prevalent rumor at the time was that de Leon had impregnated the daughter of a rancher (Graham) daughter and who had killed him on his ranch in revenge. If that were the case, it is no mystery that the murder was not solved, nor, apparently, even seriously investigated because, if true, de Leon had broken perhaps the most serious taboo maintained by Anglos in the area.
However, ancestry.com records show that the allegedly impregnated daughter later married a prominent local rancher, lived in Marfa, and was a school teacher in Valentine when she died in an auto accident in 1963. I think if the story were true she would have been shipped to a city to have her child there, which would immediately be put up for adoption, and she would not have been allowed to return to the area because of her disgrace. Anyway, this is only speculation!
Keep up the good work! I can give you whatever information I have on this case, but know this is just one of many graves you have been collecting information on.
Howdy, (the West Texas Greeting)

I was doing some ancestory research and noticed your name on the grave site of Naomi Echols. Her maiden name being Jones, I was curious if you might be related in some way?

Ken, thank you so much for posting the memorial page for William W. Barber, my Aunt's long-missing Greatgrandfather.
Your post has help to solve the mystery of his disappearance and the location of his burial. Would you mind if I made a copy of the headstone photo for my Aunt?
Thank you for all your hard work, it's much appreaciated!
