Bio and Links
Bio Photo I'm originally from Salt Lake City, Utah. I entered the U.S. Army in 1971 and have been away form "home" most of the time since. I graduated from Utah State University in 1981 and retired from the Army in 1994.I have lived in Carter County, Tennessee longer than any place else and have learned to love this place and it's history. In addition to filling photo requests, I am working on getting accurate map locations for all the Carter County Cemeteries.

RE: Richardson Cemetery
It is the Richardson Cemetery and that is that. The land is still in Richardson name. This is my relative that let the land be used as a cemetery. The family DOES NOT want any other name than what is at the cemetery listed. The sign has Lindy Richardson Cemetery. Lindy is the one who the land belonged to. This is going to cause a big fuss if it is not left alone. I don't know who put the sign up as Morgan Branch Cemetery but I talked to one of the Richardson's that is my relative and they said no way was that to be the name. I don't know who thought they had the right to try and change the name of the cemetery. The cemetery is separate from the church. No connection at all.

Green Pine Cemetery
The Green Pine community is located about one half mile south of the Patton-Simmons cemetery at the junction of Toll Branch and Powder Branch roads.I don't know of any cemetery there.Thomas Schiller Murray and his wife Lucy J.Gourley made there home in Green Pine.Thomas was the son of William H. Murray and Catherine Maude Miller, who are supposedly buried in a Green Pine Cemetery.Thomas and Lucy, however are buried in Patton-Simmons.Burials in Patton-Simmons were made as early as 1836-even before William and Catherine were born. Also, there are several Millers buried in Patton-Simmons but I cannot connect them to Catherine as yet. It's possible that Green Pine and Patton-Simmons are the same-but I have no proof.Regards,Dale

RE: Martha Hyder Treadway
thank you so much for locating this cemetery. I live in Florida and have only been able to visit Carter County once...a about six years ago now.

My mother is a Treadway...her family is from Fayette County, TN...but her g-grandparents migrated from Happy Valley in Carter County about 1890 to Fayette County and are connected to the Treadway, Hyder, Pugh families of East Tennessee and West North Carolina (general areas).

The Morgan Treadway and Martha Pugh Treadway buried at Cave Springs are my g-g-g-grandparents.

RE: Other Carter County Cemeteries
I thank you for adding the photo to my listing for Lydia Boone Powell. I noted with interest your photos of the Collins Cemetery on Simerly Creek Road in Carter County. I have a great aunt and a great uncle interred there and used to go to the "decoration" there with my grandparents. I recognize many persons whose graves you have photographed in Carter County. Keep up the excellent work! Shane Usary

Other Carter County Cemeteries
I am finding it absolutely wonderful exploring your many photos of Carter County cemeteries, some of which contain the remains of my relatives and many, many of which I visited with my grandfather, the late W. B. Street of Tiger Valley, during my long lost youth. Thanks ever so much for a wonderful photographic record of Carter County's many interesting old cemeteries.

The "Plot" Thickens
I looked up some of your photos and found that you have, indeed, photographed the grave of my great-Aunt Lydia, in the Miller Cemetery (the one that I incorrectly identified as the Boone Cemetery, based on what some Roan Mountain flk had told me). I'm very glad to know this and can now make the necessary correction. Thanks again.

Lydia Boone Powell
Thanks for your message re my great-aunt Lydia Powell. I believe the cemetery in which she was interred is properly denominated "Boone Cemetery," but am not absolutely certain. It is located on Heaton Creek Road in Carter County, on the left as you go "up the creek," just past what was once known as the Joe Smithdeal farm. It was overgrown for decades and only restored back in the eighties, I think. Both my Boone and Tipton great-great grandparents are buried there, as is my great-uncle Dave Boone, whom I never knew. It may be that no one has yet purchased a marker for Aunt Lydia. Incidentally, there is another "Boone Cemetery" just down the road, a private cemetery in which are interred Aunt Lydia's parents (and my great-grandparents), James and Loretta Tipton Boone, along with Vearl and John Boone.
