Hi William -
They are two separate cemeteries located a few miles apart. I live within 5 miles of each and I have visited both. They are listed as separate cemeteries in the Hale Collection (he identifies Fanning-Williams as Myers #17 or Williams #25 and Fanning as Faning #4) and the Ledyard Historical Society's "Historic Cemetery Inscriptions".
The Fanning cemetery is a small family plot with only a dozen or so inscribed stones. It is located off Lantern Hill Rd on the site of the original Fanning family homestead. The Fanning-Williams cemetery has probably 60 or more stones. It is located off Fanning Rd just a few miles away. Adding to the confusion Google maps has the Fanning-Williams cemetery marked as "Fanning". The Fanning Cemetery is not marked although you can spot it on Google Maps it is on the left side of Lantern Hill Rd just north of Whitford Pond. BTW I was there just before Christmas.
While Hale is considered the graver's "go to" source in CT, the Ledyard Historical Society has done a great job of identifying and cataloging Ledyard cemeteries. They maintain the ancient cemeteries and have installed signs identifying them by name.
I believe what has happened is that a contributor mistakenly entered 30 or so memorials to the Fanning Cemetery for folks buried in Fanning-Williams cemetery.
