William Richard McNutt
Hi, Thanks for your help on I am currently working on William Richard McNutt and would ask if you would please remove the photo of the couple on the memorial. I think this was found on my account when I accidently posted that photo on the wrong set of grandparents. The couple is not William and Opal McNutt.

RE: ruth smith ackman
She is beside the road. Her headstone is white with a big angel sitting in the middle of it. I think it is about half way through the cemetary. You cant miss it. Her and her husband Willam Ackman are the only ones with the name Ackman there. I cant remember who is close to her but if you look closest to the road you should find it

re: Pvt. Joseph Eugene Cummings
Hello, Melody,

I am a friend of 'soilsister', who takes care of the photo requests for the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in France. I live in the U.S., and I have access to research sources here that she doesn't in France, so sometimes when she runs up against a problem she asks me to help out.

We're certain Pvt. Cummings in not buried at the Meuse-Argonne Cemetery. From the info that was posted on Pvt. Cummings's page, it appears bio info was taken from the book "Indiana World War Records: Gold Star Honor Roll." The problem is, that book was published in 1921, and in 1921 the American Battle Monuments Commission started a program of offering families a choice as to whether their fallen soldier should remain in France with his comrades or be brought home to be buried with family or in a national cemetery like Arlington. So all of the cemeteries listed in the Indiana Gold Star book are _temporary_ cemeteries, and if you're working on Indiana WWI soldiers you should be aware that _none_ of the burial info published in there is correct.

The permanent American cemeteries in Europe are described on the American Battle Monuments Commission's website ( You can search their database for the name of someone who might be buried over there -- and unfortunately Joseph Cummings's name does not show up. Neither does it show up on the Arlington National Cemetery website ( or the VA's Nationwide Gravesite Locator ( for ntional cemeteries other than Arlington.

I have discovered that Pvt. Cummings's father Daniel is buried in Saint Josephs Cemetery, Elwood, Madison Co., Indiana (see; Joseph's brother John is also buried there. It's entirely possible Pvt. Cummings is buried there. The bio on your F.A.G. home page mentions your mother takes photos in Randolph County -- perhaps she would consider a side trip to Elwood to look for him.
