Bio and Links
Bio Photo I enter records here on Find A Grave for two reasons: First is to help others find the graves of lost family members and second is to remember our War Hero's who have given their all for our country and our freedom. I do this in hope that their sacrifice and their story will not be forgotten.

It's the SOLDIER,
not the reporter who has given us Freedom of the Press...

It's the SOLDIER,
not the poet, who has given us Freedom of Speech...

It's the SOLDIER,
not the campus organizer, who has given us the Freedom to Demonstrate...

It's the SOLDIER,
not the lawyer, who has given us the Right to a Fair Trial...

It's the SOLDIER who:
SALUTES THE FLAG,
SERVES UNDER THE FLAG
and whose COFFIN IS DRAPED BY THE FLAG.

Moved from Barton St but to where
I searched Find A Grave, looking up the first 26 of those 51 soldiers by initial and last name and throughout Fredericksburg, but unfortunately in all cases found only the Barton Street Cemetery listings.

RE: Barton Street Cemetery
Who knows, but something strange must have happened. My only knowledge comes from several visits to the plaques (by the Fredericksburg War Memorial) in recent weeks, and from finding the two duplicate Find A Grave cemeteries "Barton Street" and "Barton Street Cemetery". It was me that requested their merger. As for whether Barton Street Potter's Field (which I had created on Find A Grave, based on that plaque) was historically part of Barton Street Cemetery, or a separate cemetery at about the same location, I don't know. The Potter's Field plaque looks pretty new to me, but it's not dated, nor does it say who put it up. It does seem to me rather unlikely that the 51 Confederate soldiers would have been buried in a potter's field. I hope to be able to look for those 51 names elsewhere, first in the Fredericksburg Confederate Cemetery of course.

Kudos, Dave, for the wonderful volunteer work you do for Find-a-Grave.

I wonder if you'd kindly grant me permission to use the photo of James E. Briggs headstone in my family tree, as I have no other photo of him.

L/Cpl Edward E Bell
Hello Dave,
just a note to say thank you for fulfilling my request for a photo of Edward Bell's headstone. I am researching the people named on our local cenotaph and his name is one of them. The photo will go in his file. Thank you for the time taken to go to the cemetery and take the photo then to upload it to here. It is greatly appreciated.

RE: German translation on the Mass headstone
You are very welcome. Much of my family is German so I was interested in learning what it said as well! :)
