Cress Cemetery
Not too familiar with Washington Co. Hope you can help me.
Found a death cert. for Alice M. Wilburn who died 1948. It said she was buried in Cress Cemetery.
Chappell Hill seems more likely. Can you advise please?

Julia Nunn Hardy # 26014037
Dear WCGS,
The next time you go to Oak Rest Cemetery, Washington County, please take another photo of her headstone, and another for her husband's headstone, James Thomas Hardy #26012456. I am unable to read Julia's headstone, even when enlarged. James' is good, but part of it is in the shade. Please upload them to their memorials. You took an additional one for me of their daughter, Carry W. Compton at Oak Rest and it came out very well. Please see if you can get their inscriptions too. I don't think I have Carrie's either.
Thank you for all the work you do in Washington County. If you ever come across any extra info on the Robert S. Compton family, please let me know. I have been told they came to Washington County, Quarry-Gay Hill, Independence or Chappell Hill area in 1875 from Elmore County Alabama; Robert S. Compton and 5 of his children and 1 grandson. Two sons: Henry Clay and George Compton and 3 daughters: Alice, Emily, Mary Compton Stewart, and Mary's son, little John Compton Stewart. Emily married Dr. Berkley P Curry and Mary married John Bridges Hogg. George married Carrie West Hardy. Alice B. Compton never married. I am not sure about Henry Clay Compton. He may had married young, but in 1880 he was single. Their father, R.S. Compton passed away in 1880 & is buried at Oak Rest also-#26007277.
Are there any marriage certificates on file with the WCGS ?
Thank you so much for your time and effort.
My best,

Roberts Cem #2, Old Navasota Road, Brenham, Washington County, Texas
not sure who responded to me from the organization. I did not see a signature. Not sure who the current "owner" of the cemetery is and do not want to override their authority, but yes, I am interested in cleaning and restoring the cemetery, but only if it will remain hidden from the road. I am afraid of vandals. Our property borders the cemetery on 3 sides (the road side being the fourth). I am very adamant in wanting to clean it, but want protect it from those who might want to do it harm. I am also interested in finding out the other persons who may be buried there.

RE: Roberts Cem #2 on old Navasota Rd
Thanks for the reply.

Do you have to get permission from descendants before you go in and clean things up?

are the entries on Findagrave for this cemetery repeated from a published book instead of a physical gravestone search? the cemetery is overgrown and no one could possibly get in there in 2013.

Carrie W. Compton
Oak Rest Cemetery
Thanks so much for the additional photo. It was SO clear..the other was nice, but in the shadows..Carrie's father-in-law, R. S. Compton, and his daughter, Emily J. Compton Curry, and granddaughter, Emily Juliet Curry were bured in the Oak Rest Cemetery also. It looks like a lovley spot.
I hope that one day you can make clear photos of all buried here. The headstones here are lovely.
Your work is greatly appreciated.

Family lore says Emily J. Compton (Curry) came from Alabama to the Chappell Hill area around 1875 to teach school. Would there be any records of this in Washington CGS information? I thought perhaps it was with the Presbyterian school near the cemetery site. Please know if you have any clues as where to search of her records. It seems Emily J. Compton married about a year after arriving in Washington County.
Thanks again for you work!
