I have added these memorials, mostly from the historic cemeteries of Charleston to memorialize all the individuals who have contributed to the history of Charleston.

If I don't respond to a request for transfer it means I prefer to retain the memorial.

In the event a photo of a headstone is not included, it generally means that the memorial information was taken from a cemetery transcription or death record. One of those who did the transcription was Elizabeth C. Curtis. Without her efforts cemeteries such as Trinity United Methodist and Old Third Central Presbyterian Cemetery records would not be included or available since neither of the above church exists today, including the cemetery and headstones. I just found out yesterday January 21, 2010 that internments of Old Third Central Presbyterian Church Cemetery have been moved to Riverview Memorial in Charleston. There are others who did transcriptions, but I am not aware who they are. If someone knows, I would be glad to acknowledge them in this profile.

Some of the headstones at the Circular Church were impossible to read, however the church had previously documented many of the graves sites by plot #'s. In those cases where I could not read the headstone I used the information from the church records found at the Charleston library to identify the headstones. I did list the plots #'s on the majority of the memorials.

A special thanks to the work of Clare Jervey published in 1906 with the transcription of St. Michael's. Her transcription allowed me to include much that was unreadable.

Louis Ogier, Jr. - Memorial #37442619 and Susannah Martin Ogier - Memorial #37455773
Hi John,

I just received an email from a cousin who believes the gravestone picture posted on Louis Ogier, Jr.'s memorial page might actually be for his wife, Susannah Martin Ogier. It looks like the gravestone is engraved with Mrs. before Louis Ogier's name.

Is it possible for you to take another look at this gravestone and offer your opinion??? And, move this picture to Susannah's memorial page, if you agree???

These gravestone slabs are so old and so large, it is difficult to photograph them and see the information presented. I know you have done the best you could do and I appreciate that.

Thank you for all you do on

Keep diggin'

Well, I was looking for a Well's this morning and ran into this person that you had connected to Charles Bartlett 140124872 & Louisa Trumbull (Blake) 112258445 Wells. I figured you knew what you were talking of so I put the last name of Wells in. I do see now that you have removed the parents and he is not who you orig said he was. I know that you have emailed me several times in the past and chose to make this public. As I have said, you are not trustworthy, and I shouldn't have gotten involved. I'm sorry to me for trying. You have told me in an email that your name is John. Are you John Gibney? Please don't ask me why I get so angry. I am not angry. I just state the facts and there is no certain emotion to it. Thank you for caring though.

Francis Marion Bryan #44603410

Would you please change Francis Marion Bryan's year of birth to reflect what's on his tombstone? It's actually "1875" (June) because his sister, Mary Middleton Bryan is "1876" (November). I know there were lots of children but I don't think having one in June and then one in November is possible; plus, the tombstone close up looks like "1875."

On another note, have you seen the newly published book (2016) called "Flat Rock of the Old Time...Letters from the Mountains to the Low Country, 1837 to 1939" It's about the Middleton-Cheves family's letters - 1000s of them written from Flat Rock to Charleston.

Also have you heard of the trip in October following the footsteps of Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox? I'm coming down for the weekend. Let me know if you want details.

Campbell King #58708642
Good Afternoon, John,

I just returned from Flat Rock for a Family Reunion and while I was there, I checked at St. John in the Wilderness about this posting. Would you please add "Eliza" to her first name? This tombstone and dates is for "Eliza Campbell King" not "Campbell King."

"Eliza" is both on her tombstone and in the paper records in the Parish Office.

My grandfather used to say, "There are 10 Alexander Campbell Kings: 3 in Flat Rock, 3 in Atlanta, and 4 are dead." Couldn't figure out where this "Campbell King" came from and now I know.

Thanks. Hope you had a great summer.
