Bio Photo Hello To All...Finding our ancestors has become a passion in our lives and we truely enjoy it. It all started about a 6 yrs ago when my husband and I realized we hardly knew anything about our family history. We were soon on a conquest....

We also soon found out how important it is to have people out there who can help us find our families stones that we ourselves are unable to go visit and see. Thank all of you for what you do! Becoming a photo voluteer is our way of helping others as much as they have helped us.
My husband and I, along with our beloved little dog Sassy, truely enjoy galavanting around the countrysides visiting cemeteries and finding stones of our loved ones and adding to this wonderful site.

We try and do the best we can to fullfill all and any photo requests for Mahaska County, Iowa and have a great time doing it! At the same time we have tried to make sure that there are pictures and maps of all listed cemeteries for Mahaska County along with others we visit in other counties.

Our closest immediate family lines are Welch, Knupp, Knedler, Barnett, Rains, Saylor, Eakins, Brown, DeWitt and Ellis. We do most of our exploring in Southeastern Iowa and Northern Missouri.

We do add "non" family names from time to time that have not already been posted, so that people can more easily find their relatives.
I am more than willing to add any personal info or link relatives for these memorials if they are not your "DIRECT" relative within the 4 generations per the find a grave guidelines. I firmly believe in following the rules set by find a grave (due to some very unpleasant prior circumstances in the past)so I do my best to comply to them for transferring memorials.
So...duplicating an entry to add your own information or adding biographical information in the flower sections (which is a no-no!) will not be necessary.
Please see the Find A Grave guidelines for this type of activity!!!

I have found that requesting to manage a memorial is "NOT" the important issue here in Find A Grave....its getting information put on our family memorials that is important!

If you want multiple monuments photographed, please take the time to create a memorial for each person rather than attach a message to one request asking for multiple photos or "everyone else in that cemetery with the same surname." Its easier "not to miss" names that way and saves on gas!

I also give permission for any of my pictures to be used by anyone. Good Luck To All Of You!

RE: Forest Cemetery
Hello, Sharon,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and thanks for your wonderful work on FindAGrave the past six years.

The FindAGrave write-up for the Oskaloosa St. Mary's Cemetery was done by the St. Mary's sexton; if you'll read it, as I did, you'll see that St. Mary's is absolutely not part of Forest, although for now the FindAGrave home page for Forest erroneously says it is.

Actually, St. Mary's has been a separate cemetery for a century. Separate offices keep the records of the 2 separate cemeteries, pay the bills of the 2 separate cemeteries, and make management decisions for the 2 separate cemeteries. Truth be told, St. Mary's is more fiscally sound than Forest.

The number of memorials listed in St. Mary's will go up steadily as people move their memorials to the correct cemetery. For example, you could move yours.

My home town has Remsen St. Mary's Cemetery and Remsen Cemetery inside the same fence, with a road separating the 2 cemeteries. The next town over has Marcus Holy Name Cemetery and Marcus-Amherst Cemetery inside the same fence, with a road separating the 2 cemeteries. They are separate cemeteries with separate Boards of Directors and separate operating budgets. People are not so confused as you think.

I hope you'll move your memorials. But in any case, St. Mary's is absolutely not part of Forest, and both cemeteries need to be listed in FindAGrave.

These are truly 2 separate cemeteries, Sharon. Let's make this work.

Thanks, Bill

RE: Dean Rains
no I did not see another Rains nearby. If you search for the Monterey City Cemetery online...they have a website and have uploaded photos of most of the memorials located in the ground (not the columbariums though) might want to call them..very helpful folks.

Joseph Olson
You recently posted a photo of a stone for Joseph Olson, but it looks like there were more names on this stone, did you take photos of them also? I am thinking this is the mother and one brother I have been looking for. Names are:

Gustafa (or Gustava) Olson - Mother
Martin J Olson - Son and brother of Joseph.

If you have them also, I'd love to know. There is a memorial for Martin, but not for the mother and I'm actually hoping the father is there also. I'd appreciate any information you can give about this site and stone.

Crippen, Basil
I have taken a picture of the headstone for B. Crippen. I also found that there are three other names with his gravesite. There is a Gene Mealey buried their and two markers. The names on the markers are Litita Houser Qulliam (spelling??), and Clyde Gene Houser. The cemetery office has no record of the Litita or Clyde. Therefore we can only assume a family member may have placed the markers but it is unknown if they are actually buried there. I have made memorials for them all. If you would like me to transfer them to you, I will be happy to do so.

A List
Mary Ann Knupp
There are other dates that do not agree with any calculated birth date or date of death. Notes copied from Daniel Knupp's old German bible do not agree with either the birth or date of death. So I will leave as is until someone provides more acceptable proof of actual dates. Mary Ann (Knupp) Houck was my husband's 3rd great grandmother.

Thank you, Sharon.

RE: James Keith Barnett

Sorry there were no Barnett's near him. I always look around to see if there are any connection to someone buried near by. He is in a row that are cremains.

RE: Salter
I took a picture of a stone next to his. It is for a Theresa Salter 02/09/21 04/26/10
It says she was a 1st Lt in the army during WWII

Would that be Betty? There was no Find-a-grave page for her, so I didn't post the photo.
