Memorial# 7190993
My name is Kate and I have an opportunity to have my genealogy published at not cost. This would not be for resale but the publisher will be distributing copies to demonstrate their ink jet technology. I would like your permission to use your posted photo, Maj William Bradford, IV Memorial# 7190993, in my genealogy. I would of course give you credit for the photo.

Thank you,

Mary Churchill Stephens
Hi, Sandy.

Mary (Churchill) Stephens [1687-1723] is my 8th great grandmother in my direct maternal line (mtDNA). Hence, my sponsorship of her memorial.

Thank you for your contributions to Find a Grave.

RE: Samuel, Sarah, & Elizabeth Churchill
Thanks Sandy. I've made the edits but must consider the memorials to be WIP while I continue to research these folks.

RE: Samuel, Sarah, & Elizabeth Churchill
Sandy, thanks for this. I will be happy to have you transfer them to me - 47142894 - I will take good care of them.

This has been a labor of love and much hard work, but a lot of credit goes to Marcia Gibbs who originally put me onto all of this material. She's is an excellent, prudent, careful researcher.

I will let you know when my article on Esther (with references to these Elizabeths and Samuels) is published.

Again, thanks for the opportunity to manage these memorials.

Sandy, thanks for your note. FYI, you will find an entry in The Churchill Family of America for Samuel ((62 IV), son of Barnabas (20)), Sarah, and Elizabeth at page 18. Unfortunately, there is no entry later in the book for Samuel (62).

Also, I believe that "my" Elizabeth (Churchill) Churchill probably is interred in Taunton. She died 15 Dec 1831. I have just submitted an article entitled "Esther Churchill Quandary" to the Mayflower Descendant for publication (submitted at their request). I cite the authority for this concusion in a footnote as follows:

Vital Records of Taunton, Massachusetts to 1850, Boston: The New England Historic and Genealogical Society, 1929, presents this entry at Volume III, Taunton Deaths, page 49: “CHURCHILL, Elizabeth, wid., pleurisy, Dec. 15, 1831, a. 76, C.R.3.” The Front Matter in the volume states that C.R.3. refers to “church record, Broadway Congregational Church (Trinitarian).” The funeral service for Elizabeth’s daughter, Esther (Churchill) Collins, was held at the Broadway Congregational Church according to her obituary (quoted in full above in the text of this article) published in the Taunton Daily Gazette on August 3, 1869 at page 2. It is probable that Esther’s mother removed to Taunton where Esther and two of her siblings (Caleb and Deborah) resided. It seems beyond doubt, given the dual connection to the Broadway Congregational Church, that this Elizabeth Churchill was Esther (Churchill) Collins’ mother.

With respect to Samuel, Marcia Briggs sent me this (Marcia is the person whose original research brought all of this to my attention):

There is a listing in Plymouth Church Records of a Samuel Churchill dying in the West Indies in February 1803. His name appears on a list of people between the ages of 21 and 70 who died during 1803-1804. Using the searchable database of Plymouth Church Records in Plymouth, the list appears on page 629. I believe this is possibly a reference to the Samuel Churchill who was married to Elizabeth Churchill. His son Samuel died about 1818 (probate, birth of youngest child).

RE: Samuel Churchill #94727192
Sandy, in order to facilitate your research, I posted three pages from Elizabeth's pension application. It contains names, dates, etc. You will find that the information aligns with that of Samuel Churchill, son of Barnabas Churchill. His date of death is shown clearly as 15 Dec 1810. It also shows that he married Elizabeth (Sutton) Trotman. I can remove the photos once you're done reading them and revising the memorials of Elizabeth Sutton (not Churchill) and Samuel Churchill. This is personally frustrating to me since now I can't locate "my" ancestors, Samuel Churchill and Elizabeth (Churchill) Churchill.

RE: Samuel Churchill #94727192
Sandy, I had sent you a separate edit suggestion contemporaneously with my edit of the date of birth. Did you not receive it. I had the same doubts that you've got when first confronted with this but the pension application for Elizabeth was the final convincing proof that there were two Samuel Churchills and two Elizabeth Churchills at the same time in this local history - I had fallen into the same trap that you've fallen into. If you will give me your email address, I will email to you the pension document (finding it on line is very challenging). You can email me at and I will reply with the document. Thank you for taking this seriously. I've already deleted this Elizabeth as the mother of my great grandmother Esther Churchill (and the family links of Esther's children, too).

Sandy, I don't understand your reference to "parents." The Samuel Churchill who died in 1810 and is the subject of your memorial was not married to Elizabeth (Churchill) Churchill - he was married first to Sarah Thomas, second to Elizabeth Totman. I can email you the pension application of Elizabeth's if you wish. You consulted Kingman's Burial Hill record but the more important record is that of Drew's Burial Hill records showing this Samuel interred next to Sarah and Elizabeth. Do you want me to email you those records?
