My brother "Skip" and I enjoy genealogy. He's my expert regarding Belmont county, OH. We both take photos of tombstones, especially of family members. Some of the surnames are Bain, Bane, Blaine, Budd, Curtis, Giffen, Giffin, Griffith, Haines, Hepburn, Hinkle, Keyser, Long, Milligan, Pond, Spears, Shahan, and Terrill.|
UPDATE: Skip started a GIFFEN DNA Group.
In addition to Belmont county, OH, we explore Ohio and Brooke counties in WV. I travel between Belmont Co and Columbus, OH. So, I make a few stops along the way, such as Cambridge or Zanesville.
I look for family tombstones across the country and try to link them back to Belmont Co., OH or Ohio Co., WV.
I have several GIFFEN / GIFFIN family trees at ancestry.com. There's my Giffen family which started with Robert and Mary (Bane) Giffen. Plus a family tree for the Andrew Giffin family. I recently started a Simon Giffin tree.
My ancestry.com tree name is "Terry Magyar"
More recently, I've added family trees for Giffens/Giffins in the following Ohio counties; Athens, Butler, Coshocton, Licking, Miami & Hamilton, and Ross County. Many of these Scotch-Irish lines can be followed back to the late 1700s, in Penn.
I presently live in Franklin Co., OH, but grew up in Belmont Co., OH.
Please contact me (use the EDIT function) if need an item corrected of if you have additional information regarding any of the these families.
I highly recommend the Cumberland Trail Genealogical Society's book "Your Guide to Belmont Co. Cemeteries". ($20 + shipping)

Oscar was, according to our records, disinterred and moved to Woodlawn, from Greenwood.
You may want to make those changes to your records.

Hi again...I just went back and finished reading your "bio" and see you are on Ancestry. I will send you a contact message and we can go from there. It looks like our families are a match and I would like to see the DNA matches too. My Aunt (Giffin also) will be interested as well.

My Mom was a Giffin and bother her sister and I have done the DNA on Ancestry. If you use that site, just send me a note from there and I will be glad to share information with you. My user name is cherylhayesburger. My trees are all marked private but I can still compare info with you and see if we have a match. My maternal Grandfather was from Montana.
I also have a copy of a family history that one of the relatives did years ago as well as two books on the brothers, (one each) Andrew Giffin I and Robert Giffin, sons of John Giffin: (Birth 1720 in Kildavee, South End, Argyll County Scotland - Death Abt. 1795 in Kildavee, South End, Argyll County Scotland) and his wife, Janet Dunlop: (Birth 29 Mar 1701 in Garnkirk, Lanarkshire, Scotland - Death 1765 in Garnkirk, Lanarkshire, Scotland).
I look forward to hearing from you.

Yep, I'm on ancestry and recently discovered who she really was via records that can be found online. She was born Margarete LeFever to Campbell Lefever who moved from Washington County to West Virginia and then Belmont County. She first married the man named Crow and then married William Fitch in Belmont County, Ohio in 1820. Their first son is named Campbell Fitch. I think she may have had child or children to Crow as I see a Birdsong Crow aged 5 I think, living with them in 1850. Im betting it was a grandchild. Still a lot to find about this family. In any event, this is Margarete LeFever Crow Fitch. The name Margarete continued all the way to my Grandmothers sister. Thanks Terry!
|Red||James Garfield Giffen|
I do not know anything about his parents, I am distantly related on the Gnepper side through his son. His parent's names are on his marriage license and that's all I know about them. I know he had a brother named Andrew. James' obit from the Sandusky Register, 3/3/1955: JAMES G. GIFFEN CLYDE, March 3—Services for James Garfield Giffen, 74, 143 Lamer St, who died Wednesday in Bellevue Hospital, will be held at 2 p. m. Friday in the Fiser Funeral Home, the Rev. Avery Buller, officiating. Burial is to be in MrPherson Cemetery. Surviving are his widow, Lottie; a son, Glenn, a military attache stationed in Paris; one grandchild and a brother, Andrew.

Samuel John & Hannah GRIFFIN Pouder are my husbands 3rd grand aunt & uncle.
Samuel is the brother of Harriett Ann POUDER Ellenberger who is the 3rd great grandmother of my husband. Harriett was married to John Ellenberger.
