To keep weeds out of the beautiful Find A Grave garden....

First, I don't link to Burial Unknown Site Memorials as BU shouldn't be on FAG according to the guidelines of the website. The first criteria for making a memorial on FAG is having the burial site, as this is a grave registration site. When you made a BU, you have a chance of losing the memorial to the member who "Find A Grave" in the cemetery.

Second, I may or may not transfer outside of the guidelines to an established member. It is my choice. Long-time hard working-members, who are busy in surveying cemeteries and taking grave photos impress me more than someone who is collecting others' memorials for their personal goal or waiting for someone to find the burial sites for their numerous memorials made with an "unknown burial site".

Lastly, there are no duplicated memorials on FAG. If I find a duplicated memorial while researching this site, there is 99% chance that it will be deleted or merged eventually.

You may disagree with the guidelines but remember the guy who started Find A Grave wrote them. He is the boss.

Many of the memorials transferred to me were done without my request for them. These memorials have found a home and will be nurtured.

Also, thank you for all the flowers and tokens left on my family's memorial. They are all sincerely appreciated by me and my family.

Remember to check on the Discussion Forums here. They are very newsy, helpful and interesting!

I leave nasty postings on my profile page so others can see just how rude and stupid people can be to others. Most read and laugh. :)

RE: Rebecca Matthews
I surely will. I'm friends with the pastor of the church adjoining the cemetery where she is buried, and the Barret plot is right on the edge of the cemetery near the road. If/When one is placed, I will be sure to photograph it and add it to Find-a-Grave.

I'll let you know when that happens, and thanks for the recognition.

RE: Margaret Towler.
You are most welcome. I am always curious about requests and I read something about your getting the old DAR magazines and thus your posting information and bio's. How awesome of you! I am a member of DAR Chapter Keewaydin in Minneapolis so of course decided it was important to post this photo. I did not know Margaret was buried here but will share with a Minnesota Chapter who is documenting deceased DAR grave sites this information and with her connections to Minnesota I know they will be pleased if they do not have this information. So your post was most welcome and I will pass it along.
I am sure this will be my last photo of the year.
I did know where the Towler Family was buried so it was not to bad with a snow shovel.
Thanks Linda...I wish I were in Florida..I love it there and used to spend a lot of time in the Keys.
Thanks once again..Rachel

Linda:

Thanks for your reply, which I have copied below. All of the memorials I have posted are direct ancestors (ancestry great grandparents) of my wife or me. You seem to appreciate the old pictures and bios I have posted. When I make a duplicate memorial I have previously contacted the creator of the memorial prior to making the memorial and asked that maintenance be transferred to me so that I can make necessary corrections, ad a good bio, etc. Those memorials have been made by people who know absolutely nothing about our ancestors. When I do not hear from the creator after a couple of months, I go ahead and make a new memorial and notify findagrave. However, findagrave often takes no action or it takes a long time for them to do so.

I do not appreciate your condescending and assive/agressive tone when you communicate, nor do I appreciate your saying you sent me notice of a duplicate memorial in October and now you are notifying findagrave to merge the two. Most likely a good bio or old pictures will be deleted. You are actually taking rather aggressive action with regard to someone else’s memorials without actually being aware of what that person has done to get the situation corrected. I realize you are saying you are “following the rules,” and perhaps you are, but you are doing it in a manner that is not consistent with appropriate behavior. You have no idea what a person has submitted to findagrave to get a memorial corrected. Linda, when you submit your requested actions to findagrave, it is possible that the newer correct memorials will be deleted by finadgrave, and the old memorials that have errors will be retained, with no pictures and no bio.

In September 2013, Ancestry.com purchased findagrave, and they are still in the process of merging information into Ancestry.com (links). Ancestry.com discontinued their MyFamily.com site in September of this year. The company now is in the business of making a profit, which is OK. I understand they are reviewing rules for findagrave. I would speculate that sometime in the future they might be charging for findagrave, or might just merge it into ancestry.com. But in 2010, 2011 and 2013 ancestry.com indicated that their MyFamily.com site was a site that served genealogy research well. So in 2010, my own Couch Family genealogy group paid for annual membership and the 250 or so in our group created a site that was pretty massive, with thousands of hours dedicated to developing it. A small group of us paid the annual fee, and it was opened free by us to all in the family line, no matter where they lived. Well, it September 2014, the MyFamily.com site was shut down by ancestry.com. Perhaps they will keep findagrave like it is.

Have a nice day.

Please tell me what duplicate memorials you are speaking of.

As you notice from some of the postings, people are somewhat concerned about getting messages from you without reference to specific memorials.

Thanks,

MY REPLY (Linda Davis' reply):

David,

When I sent a notice to any member, I use the SAC system from the memorial. A SAC is a "suggestion and correction". This is an email from Find A Grave to the member giving the name and memorial number with a suggestion or correction from me and to make sure that you can get the memorial mentioned in the SAC, I include a link to the memorial. I NEVER email any member directly without using the SAC system.

I Find A Grave doesn't have your correct email address or these emails from Find A Grave are going in your junk email box, you have a problem to solve.

Also, as I posted on your profile page, I have already sent the duplicates found in early October to Edit, the people to who merged or delete duplicated memorials.

Going through my email delete box, I found only one as the others must have been deleted out of my computer: Fay Baugham Memorial # 120283152. You made a memorial for her on Nov 13, 2013 and Jim Lee made the original one on Aug 5, 2009. Looking at the very small cemetery index (3 dups and 4 originals), there are also duplicates for Nancy Baugham and Thelma Philips (Thelma isn't your duplicate as someone else made that one).

As I said in the other posting and in this one, Edit is handling the situation now.

Please search carefully before making memorial to avoid duplicates. Read the guidelines on the left of any memorial under "Help with Find A Grave". This is a grave registration site with one grave for one memorial. That causes problems when a member attempts to store their genealogy data here and there are already memorials made for their ancestors four or five years earlier. Post your data and priceless old photos on the original memorials AND DON'T MAKE A DUPLICATED MEMORIAL. I am ending this conversation as I can't offer anymore information.

Thanks for adding the pictures today. I added your caption info to her bio, I hope that's okay with you. I have a nice color picture I can add if you delete the bottom picture--if not we can keep it as is. THANKS again.

RE: Thanks for the photo
You're welcome, Linda. I'm sure she was very special and her light lives on in your heart. Her stone was so lovely in the sunlight following the freshly-driven snow. I left it untouched and hope my photo reflects the beauty of what I saw there today. I took her husband's photo as well in case his side had not yet been done. Blessings to you and your family.
