I stumbled across this site over ten years ago, made a few entries, and wandered off. I returned after three years and realized it was a wonderful opportunity to do something meaningful, for both the dead and the living.|
I am currently working on recording cemeteries in my home area, as well as those in Blair Co, Pa., my area of interest. My particular passion is recording stones that are 'trying hard to soon become unreadable'.
I am always thrilled when I can take an almost unreadable or broken tombstone, and, with a little research, successfully identify the person. Some have taken me years, but the harder the chase, the more satisfying the victory, especially knowing that someone out there may be searching for that elusive ancestor or relative...
I try to put as much application into stranger's graves as I would those of my own family, as I consider this a labor of love.
If anyone is helped by my efforts and wants to say thank-you, considering leaving a flower for my sponsored memorials. All tokens are appreciated.
I am a "no-dispositions-unknown" contributor.
Please note - I try to act on SACs within 72 hours. If I do not respond within a week, feel free to resend; I may have missed it. I will not make links, however, to burial unknowns.
In the past I have been very liberal with transfers, including many out-of-guidelines transfers. I loved turning memorials over to family.
Sadly however, having been 'burned' a number of times recently, I am rethinking that policy. Most of the memorials I have happily transferred over have had not one iota of additional information added by the transferee, aside from links, often times to 'burial unknowns.' When things ARE added, they are frequently cut and paste entries from Ancestry or FamilySearch indices, making the memorial unattractive and about about as personable as a baseball score card. Often too, the transferees get bored and wander away from the site, abandoning their memorials and when I find new info to add they never reply.
If you request an out-of-guidelines transfer, I will review your current memorials to see if you are good stewards of them, and base my decision on that. I am very happy to add additional information to 'flesh-out' existing memorials, and if you work with me on that I may later reconsider a transfer that I did not initially grant.
And on a lighter note:
How many Findagravers does it take to change a light bulb?
One to change the bulb.
One to make a correct memorial for the old bulb
Three to make duplicate memorials for the old bulb in the same cemetery.
Five to make BU's for the old bulb, and include graphic details of its demise.
One to move a BU of the old bulb to the correct cemetery and insist the original be deleted as a dupe.
Three to plop the old bulb in various defunct cemeteries in the same county where it burned out.
Three to add copyrighted photos of the old bulb taken from another website.
One to add a full obit of the old bulb from the local paper, including the names of all its surviving bulblets.
One to create a new cemetery called "Old Bulb Farm Cemetery" to add the old bulb and link it to its parent bulbs (also added to the Bulb Farm Cemetery with no death dates) and a note saying "this is where the bulbs were located when they burned out, so they must be here".
One to immediately demand a transfer of the old bulb's memorial on the basis that it is the 3rd cousin twice removed of their stepfather's sister's daughter's bulb.
One to create an illegal pre-need for the new bulb.

Oops, left out the link:

Thanks, Zella. Here is a link to the 1860 Census on Ancestry.com. Both he & Elizabeth are listed as well as their 9 kids!
He is listed as "Chas. Sweeney" according to the transcription, but on the census form it looks more like the correct "a" instead of an "ee".

Since we don't know if he was born in Ireland or Pennsylvania much less the county or town, I'd suggest changing the birthplace to "Unknown" so it doesn't mislead others.

Zella, Charles is my Great-Great-Grandfather so thank you for the photo of his headstone. I'd like to know from where the birth data was found, as it is internally conflicting.
County Clare is in the Province of Munster and is on the west side of Ireland abutting the Atlantic Ocean, while Dublin is in the Province of Leinster on the east side of Ireland abutting the Irish Sea.
Grandpa Charles couldn't have been born in both! I've also been told that he was born in Pennsylvania so that is another thing that I need to clarify.

Thank you, Zella, for your contribution to his memorial. I posted it today.

Well thanks for offering. There are a few I am having trouble with. George Shirley #79233092
James Shirley #79212557 and Wesley Shirley #78805552. I've done familysearch.org and I've tried Google search. I cannot seem to find their obits or at least where they died. Two of those memorials are my sister, Delaine's, whom you've corresponded with as well. We'd be so happy to be able to complete these from that generation.
