Bio Photo My husband and I are both retired and enjoy researching family. We have photographed many grave markers in the Southeast and are willing to help others who want pictures of their ancestors' graves. Our families are names Blankenship, Cameron, Ellison, Whitman, Bolan, and Mitchell plus other related families. Both of us were born and grew up in Alexander City, AL where we still live. We have 4 sons and 11 grandchildren.

RE: George W. BLANKENSHIP
Edith Thank you very much for your message. I must say I am puzzled, as I do not use my phone for anything Internet related, in addition to which my phone account is suspended while I am switching services. The email I sent you was originated from my home computer. I just re-checked my email account, and I cannot find an email message from you (either a reply to my message or a new thread) in my inbox, nor in my spam file. I hate to trouble you, but I would appreciate it if you would attempt to send me the information again, and you might want to double check the email address, as I find a very common error folks make with mine is to spell it with an extra e, newsomepage, rather than the correct newsompage@yahoo.com But it may just be that there was some glitch with the email system. I do apologize for the inconvenience, and I really appreciate your help with this project. - John

George W. BLANKENSHIP
Hi, Edith - I sent you an email on Monday evening regarding the application for George's grave marker from the VA. I just wondered if you had received it - if not, I can try resending it. Thanks so much! - John

Hi - Thank you for your contributions to the BLANKENSHIP postings at Linwood Cemetery. According to my research, George W. BLANKENSHIP, who is the son of W. H. H. & Josephine (HOLLENBECK) BLANKENSHIP, served as drummer for Company E "Muscogee Rifles," 12th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, CSA. Because he is known to be buried in Linwood Cemetery and his grave is not marked, he is eligible to receive a military grave monument free of charge from the Veterans Administration, as a benefit of his service (this is assuming I am able to confirm his service, which I should easily be able to do at the Columbus Public Library). In order to apply for the grave marker, I would need authorization from a relative, since I am not kin to him that I know of. Would you be willing to authorize me to make application, or do you know of someone who would? It doesn't matter how distant or indirect the kinship is, and the VA doesn't require documentation of the kinship, only a letter of statement of how the individual is kin to the candidate soldier and that I am authorized to apply on behalf of the family. I can compose the letter and email it to you (or whatever family member) to print, sign, and mail, if you are willing. The VA pays for the manufacture of the grave monument and the shipping; the Columbus Sexton's office receives it and holds it until our volunteers can place it on the grave. I do this as a community service. I have successfully applied for and placed around 30 of these locally in the last few years. You can see an example of one I ordered & placed in Linwood Cemetery pictured at Memorial #116649406 for Francis G. WILKINS. The one for George would also be upright white marble with the pointed top and bearing the Southern Cross of Honor emblem. If you like, you can message me back here on FindAGrave or you can email me at newsompage[at]yahoo[dot]com. Thanks - John P.S. The marker would be placed in the J. BLANKENSHIP lot in the Old Cemetery section (Section G, Lot 26 in Dolores Aurty's "Historic Linwood Cemetery" book), since this is where his grave evidently is. - jml

Hi Edith,

Thank you for contacting me to meet. I'm going out of town in a week until Labor Day. I would like to meet after Labor Day if that's okay. I will call you to set up a meeting. Have a blessed day.

RE: father
Thank you so much for your response Edith. i appreciate the work you do. Your information about the roots of James Mikel gave a huge boost to my geneological research.

father
Edith, you've listed 2 children for James Mikel Kennedy, husband of Nuell Collins. However, there were 3 children, one of whom was my father. He was the middle child, Lloyd Collins Kennedy, born 1910. I spoke at length to your husband sometime back about this history.

BTW, I went to the Grove Hill Cemetery and viewed the records. One of Nuel's sister's is buried there, as is John Morgan (my father signed the death certificate). Nuel is buried there but she has no headstone. My mother is buried in a different part of Grove Hill, and my father is buried in a different cemetery.

Lloyd Collins was known as "Irish Jack" Kennedy and was a professional wrestler.
