Ghost Hill Cem.
Mr. Furtaw, thank you for all the good works you are doing. I have a lot of relatives at Ghost Hill Cem. Eleazor & Cornelia Sloat are my GG Grandparents. Albert Sloat is my GG Uncle. Other relatives include Osborn's,Sturdevant's, Potter's, Robinson's. If my health improves I would like to make a visit. Is it open to the public? Is it hard to get to?

Thank You again

Re: John Ward # 67854840

Records in New York state were not required to be kept until 1880, so I have no birth, marriage or death records. I arrived at this parentage through association through census records, newspaper articles, proximity and what I can deduce from them.

In 1840, the family of John and Johanna Ward is found in Black Brook, Clinton County, with two sons and one daughter. Names are not listed, so we cannot assume John b. 1832 (1833 by another record) is one of them.

In 1850, I found two John Wards of the right age and approximate location to be John Ward b. 1832. One in the town of Newcomb, Essex County, and one in the town of Au Sable, Clinton County. However, the John in Newcomb is listed as being born in Canada, which we know our John Ward was not, so this leaves the John Ward of the town of Au Sable. In 1850, John and Johanna are also residing in the town of Au Sable, Clinton County, with one son and three daughters. Two daughters are under ten years of age, and add to the family size of 1840. The second son listed in 1840 is of the correct age to be John, b. 1832. In this census, John Ward jr. is residing in the household of Edward Morgan, listed as a sawyer. Edward Morgan is also listed as a sawyer. The John and Johanna Ward household is enumerated close to the Edward Morgan household, indicating they are near neighbors. It was common during this time for older children to work out of the home as laborers, apprentices and servants, so this is likely the situation with John.

In the 1855 New York state census, John (b. 1832) is listed as having been born in Essex county, however, I suspect this is in error, and he was likely born in the town of Black Brook or Au Sable, Clinton County. These places are very close to each other. Any way, it indicates that John was born and lived his entire life (except for time during the Civil War) in the same vicinity. This increases the likelihood of John being the first son of John and Johanna. John probably moved to Jay after his marriage to Lucinia Hays, that being her home.

The other son, William Ward, I suspect took over the farm of John and Johanna, this again suggested by census records and William's obituary. The best estimate I can make of the location of this farm would be near the town lines of Black Brook and Au Sable, on current Route 9. Anson Bigelow, a neighbor in the census, had a farm on this road in the town of Black Brook, close to the town line with Au Sable. The Ward farm was probably east of there, toward the Au Sable town line, or possibly in the town of Au Sable. This would explain why in some census records the family is listed in Black Brook and in others in the town of Au Sable. See the Beers maps of 1856 for Clinton County and you can locate the Anson Bigelow farm near the town line.

I also researched all the Ward families within a couple counties to eliminate them as possibilities. The only family that comes close is a Hosea Ward family I find in 1830 in the town of Lewis, Essex County. I checked this family carefully, finding that this family relocated to Orleans County, New York, and then points west. Genealogies of this family I have found do not list a son John. They are gone from Essex County by 1840.

The Ward family in Jay now are direct descendants of John Ward b. 1832. I need to ask them if they have more information. My husband is also a direct descendant of this John Ward.

I fulfilled the request for William Cordells marker along with his wife, Mabel, but I see there is already a picture of Williams. Let me know that it's redundant and I'll remove it.

I appreciate your information that this is a duplicate, however the two pages for him both have great information and are not duplicates. One is the information about a memorial in Manila while the one at the United States Naval Academy is his actual memorial and his family information. Thanks for your contributions.
