|Since I was a youngster, I enjoyed listening to the stories the older relatives told. I did not realize that was the beginning of my genealogy interest. Shortly after my husband and I married in 1969, we went to his family reunion. The hostess had a beautiful book about 6 inches thick with family information. (That research is now in the local library in a separate collection.) At that moment, I decided I wanted to do what she did.|
Most of my family took the migration route from the Carolinas through Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi "for a spell" and then to Claiborne and Bienville Parishes in northern Louisiana. Major surnames include: Dobbins, Baker, Carter, Hays, Crossland, Caskey, Cantrell, Hammontree, Cox, Bassett, Kilpatrick, White, Harper, Pearson. To my surprise many Quaker families from Newberry, SC are in this line.
My husband's family started their migration from Patrick, Henry, and Pittsylvania Counties in southern Virginia southward through Georgia and Mississippi to the Felicianas in southern Louisiana. Major surnames include: Bennett, Lyons, Young, Mills, Hays, Lilley, Morris, Knight, Moore, Swoope, Hairston, Starnes, Rheams. The Quaker lines in this family orginated in Bucks County, PA.
My husband is very supportive of my hobby/compulsion. We routinely visit courthouses, cemeteries, and archives throughout the South.
I welcome corrections and additional information from cybercousins.

I believe Rosa Adelle Hays died in 1892- Could you take a look at the stone (there's a photo) and see if you had a typo. Thanks.

Is your husband related to Coy S. Bennett, former principal of Gibsland High School?

|S. Woods||Mays family|
I am related to the Mays family through my great, great grandmother Lucy Elizabeth Mays who married Raiford/Rayford Riley Rhodes. I am also related to the Garner family through my great grandmother, Cynthia Alice Garner who married Francis Barto Rhodes. Archellaus G. Mays and Lucy Elizabeth Mays were siblings. We think that Lucy Elizabeth Mays Rhodes is buried in an unmarked grave somewhere in the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. Hopefully we will eventually located it so a grave marker can be place on it.

I was just getting ready to let you know her memorial was updated. It took me a little longer because I always try and verify the information I receive via sac and I got distracted with finding a little 3 year olds information. Normally I really try hard to do the SAC as soon as I get to them, or at least within a few hours. I don't like letting them pile up. If there is anything else you would like me to add please let me know.

It's been along time since I've been to this site. My daughter and I used to post a lot and try to help in our area. However, if you'd like this posting transferred to you, I will be glad to do it--or the site managers can do it for us. God bless!
