Bio Photo Hello...

All requests for transfers should be done through the EDIT tab on the memorial that you would like...and please do not forget to add YOUR Findagrave number. This is the method that I prefer because it is easier for me. Thank you.

K. Martin
Jan and Marie Linhart
You are absolutely correct - the Linhart memorials are duplicates. The really bad thing is that I posted both the old and the new ones. Thank you pointing out the double entries.

It is going to take some help from findagrave to clean this up because I don't want to eliminate the information and links in the new memorials, so please bear with me, I will clean this up. Below is a copy of the note that I just sent to the findagrave folks:

To the friendly folks at www.findagrave.com.

I screwed up.

About 13 years ago, I created an account at findagrave and added just two memorials. The account name was KimMartin (#46531548)

Four years later, I came across the website again. Forgetting my old account, I created a new account under K. Martin (#46815030). Under this second account, I have added 664 memorials and 1944 photos.

Another member has pointed out to me that I have double entered my great grandparents, Jan and Marie Linhart. To let you know how much I messed up, I even managed to add photos to the memorials that I created under the first account name without even thinking about the double entries. I would now like to eliminate the two memorials that I added under the name KimMartin. I might guess the best way to do this is to transfer the ownership of those two memorials to me so that I can delete them.

The memorials that I added 13 years ago under the name KimMartin are #6333509 and #6333488. If you transfer them to me, I can eliminate them - or, if it would be "cleaner", please transfer them to me and I will edit them to match the new ones that I improperly created and then I will eliminate my new ones. The newer memorials are: #14945611 and #14945449.

Just trying to clean up my mess - sorry for the inconvenience. Let me know which deletion path is preferable.

Thanks

Kim Martin

Lloyd Alexander Tucker, Sr. # 32179891
Hi Dave,

Thanks for your note. All is not lost! :) Here is the duplicate number for Joseph Alexander Tucker, Sr. It is #32179891. There is still a memorial for him, and it has the correct dates. I accidentally switched the numbers, but either memorial will work for him. Now all we need to do is add his spouse and children, and I will send the edits for that.

Thanks, again, for your help in getting these memorials straightened out!

RE: Vicki Lachowicz
Love LOVE your sign! It's hilarious! I have a fan base involving my ex-husbands family here on Find A Grave & across the internet. They are not nice people. Why not give them something to talk about? So a BIG THANK YOU! Just PERFECT! They tend to think I get through life with my body, and not my brains. Taphophile anyone? ME ME! I RAISE BOTH MY HANDS! Guilty as Charged! LOL.

I just learned a new word!
OMGosh... I just learned a new word!

Taphophile - describes an individual who has a passion for and enjoyment of cemeteries.

I saw your salutation on one of your messages to someone else... so I looked it up! How fun! Thanks for that!

Happy taphophiling to you, too! :)

RE: deliberate duplications
I agree that a graver should offer the additional information to the original contributor. I do it all the time with things like parents' names when the parents don't have memorials, hoping they will be added in the future.

There are a lot of duplicate memorials. I find them when I'm searching for people with the same names. So far I have only found one contributor who admitted to deliberately adding duplicate memorials and have only found a few who, as a matter of course, don't seem to search for existing memorials. I think there are some newer contributors who don't understand that they can add a photo to a memorial created or managed by someone else, and they create duplicates just to post the photos. Most of us HATE to learn we have added a duplicate because it's such a waste of our time.

I LOVE the automated SAC function! Before it was implemented, I almost NEVER got responses to SAC messages I sent. Some contributors still never respond to requests to add bio information. I imagine some gravers create duplicates out of frustration just to add that info, instead of asking Find A Grave to do it when the memorial's creator doesn't respond. My experience with non-responsive contributors is usually because the person has "gone inactive," and I send a message to Find A Grave suggesting they check the account's activity.

I'm not blaming anyone for duplicates, though, until Find a Grave's search function is foolproof, or close to it. I've had too many occasions where a search didn't find a memorial for a person when I KNEW one existed. In fact, it happened to me again just yesterday. Usually checking the partial-surname search box helps, but not always; and I have no idea why.

A couple of years ago there was one memorial I could only reach through the link on Ancestry. Find A Grave wouldn't retrieve it by name OR memorial number and said "memorial not found."

The duplicate memorials that are the biggest pain to correct are caused by duplicate cemetery listings, and I'm always amazed at how often that happens. I don't know how often you've run across that. Some contributors add cemeteries without adequate research first. Sometimes the cause is multiple local names for a cemetery, and funeral homes are often to blame. By now, there should be very few cemeteries not already added to Find A Grave. I added three very small Native American cemeteries in Oklahoma in one day a couple of years ago, but only after a whole day of internet research to determine they weren't in Find A Grave by another name, that they actually existed, and they were separate cemeteries in the same county that weren't far apart. Sometimes I take a break from memorials and work a few days on cemetery corrections. Correcting duplicate cemetery listings is a almost always a multi-step process and can sometimes take days to finish.

Sorry to be so long winded!
