|Please feel free to use any photos I've posted online. I manage many memorials of people I am not related to. |Susan McLaughlin||James Gilkinsen McLaughlin 1868-1910|
James Gilkinsen McLaughlin went from NY to Southern Colorado to work on the (D&RGW), now known for it's tourist run from through the spectacular Animas River gorge from Durango to Silverton.
This 'run' originated in Alamosa, CO and wended it's way down through Chama, NM in order to avoid Wolf Creek pass, just under 11,000 feet in altitude. It reached Durango from the south and went on to Silverton.
Jas. G. McL's wife, Cornelia Vail McL, also of Duchess Co., NY, subsequently ran a boarding house for Railroadmen in order for her only remaining child to survive. Genevieve, went on to become what I believe to be the first woman news reporter in Colorado, and was the biographer of the then Governor.
I appreciate so much your giving 'Jas. G.' an online presence.
Thanks so much for adding a gravestone photo for my great-grandfather, William Henry White, buried in Pawling Cemetery, NY. It took me years to find his date and place of death/burial. Online listings of burials at the Cemetery at that time did not include him. Thank you for adding the tombstone photo!

I believe his wife was Sarah Hall (1778-1840).

No, but William is my great-grandfather and I'd really like to know. I know that he died in the 1930s because of census records, and I'm positive he stayed in Poughkeepsie until his death. I emailed St. Peter's Cemetery in Poughkeepsie asking if any records of William exist, waiting for a reply.

Susan - I sent off to Pawling as you suggested - a nice response came back that they have no record of the death - also said the charge is up to $21 - but returned my payment.
I have it on my list to go to Sherman, CT with a request.
Thanks for your advice.

This is the number for the one that was the same as yours: # 45568152
I notice now, though, that on Find A Grave, there's an Armenia Union Cemetery and an Armenia Cemetery. I guess you shouldn't delete after all until it's determined which is the actual burial location. Or possibly if they are one and the same cemetery. My apologies for writing prematurely. Sincerely, Kathy

Hi, I actually took all 3 photos of that stone. My friend Terry Akin (deceased) entered thousands of my photos from this area. I happened by that place several years later and noticed someone had done something to the stone so it is more legible so I took another photo. It is a bit hard to find. If you are heading north (from Brewster) it would be on your left on Rt. 22. As I recall there is an older farm/house kind of place with a couple of odd signs in the front yard. It is next to and kind of behind that old place. Harder to find when the trees are in bloom. Also I believe there is a dirt road that goes behind that house and memorial so look for a small dirt road off of Rt. 22 that would take you behind it. I will try to take a better look for you over the weekend if you don't find it before then. I am heading over that way to visit a friend. Hope this was helpful in some way. Cheers, karen

Hi Susan, thank you for your notes - looks like the transfer went fine, and thank you for doing that.
And thank you for the notes about the cemetery - I'll have to contact them to find out exactly where the memorial is. There is also a Methodist section there which may be a good bet.
There is a book called "The Life and Times of Elijah Hedding" which mentions the memorial but not a specific location in the cemetery.

I have 3200 names and about 2,000 obituaries for the book - it is quite the project, finally working on the finished index, and then will be hopefully putting the final touches on the book itself. Doing well other than that.
