I visited Find-A-Grave for years filling in blanks on my family tree. After retirement I decided to become a contributor too (2010) here in central Oklahoma. I took all the small cemeteries in Canadian County and some in Kingfisher County. Now that there are so many volunteers with cell phone cameras, I have given up. I still take photos when I am in Illinois or Kentucky cemeteries.|
PLEASE DO NOT ADD SCANS OF OBITS, NEWSPAPER ARTICLES, DEATH CERTIFICATES or any other document to any memorial. I will be happy to transcribe them and add them to the bio section if you send them to me. There are only 5 allotted spaces for pictures on each memorial. By adding documents as scanned images on the memorial, you are possibly preventing someone else from adding a personal photo that you don't have. In addition IT IS AGAINST FIND-A-GRAVE RULES and can be removed. Thank you.
For Obits in the Johnson County Indiana and surrounding counties that are not included on memorials, or for obits of people who do not have a known burial location, see this link:
JOHNSON COUNTY INDIANA OBITS
THANK YOU to all of you who have posted the many old obits we have sent you. We have had many comments of appreciation from descendants. Some of these old obits told intimate and/or historical details about the person and those are very valuable to researchers.
Mark McCrady is working diligently to cull these old obits from newspapers at the Indiana State Library, find burial locations and photograph stones, and I am working many hours a day transcribing them. Lois Johnson, Johnson County INGENWEB Coordinator, is placing these obits on her site (above) so they can be shared with family.
Unfortunately, we have not been able to find burial locations for all of these people, but you may find their obits on her site.
To all of you who will not post these old obits we send you, F/G has relaxed what they used to say about it and any obit dated before 1922 is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN and there is no copyright on them:
Can I add a memorial from a newspaper or other 3rd party source?
Find A Grave does not discourage the legitimate indexing of the deceased through obituaries or other 3rd party accounts. Newspapers represent a very good source of information as a public record. What we ask is that those who index and memorialize the deceased from newspapers and other 3rd party accounts do so with full respect of copyright, refrain from adding information about living people, and respond generously to the family of the deceased. –
A FEW TIPS FOR TAKING GOOD TOMBSTONE PICTURES:
1. Take a photo of the entire tombstone first, then get a close-up of the name if it is hard to read on the whole view. Try to fill the frame with the stone and not the surrounding countryside, homes, cars, etc.
2. Look for your reflection or shadow in the tombstone BEFORE you take the picture! Stand to the side to prevent reflection.
3. Squat in order to get on the same level as the tombstone - don't stand and shoot down at a sharp angle.
4. If the stone is vertical, take the picture vertically - it will display on the memorial much larger than horizontally. PLEASE DO NOT put the picture up sideways!!! This is very disrespectful!!
5. Invest in a good camera and an editing program like Photoshop Elements to adjust contrast and crop and straighten the image.
6. Remember that now F/G allows an 8MB size on photos.
We are trying to preserve history so we want the very best pictures possible - it may be all that survives!
** My photos may be used for any nonprofit purpose - ONLY IF - you give credit by listing your source so others can find it. Noting the source INCLUDES the photographer's name, and the Find-a-Grave memorial number or website.**
Some of my family surnames:
KENTUCKY - Durrett, Skaggs, Pierce, Bloyd, Thompson, Cantrell, Elmore, Chaudoin

|NL Nuttall||William Wallace Lee|
Hi, thanks for providing the death notice for William Wallace Lee. I would like to know though, since the brother mentioned seems to be Richard Miles Lee, (1848-1927), if the paper gave him the wrong middle initial, W instead of M, or was that just a transcription error?
|lmkruser4||Memorial # 132908478: Allie Horning|
Allie Horning is my maternal great-grandmother. I can provide information to add to her memorial such as parents and children, along with their respective memorial information. How would you like to receive the genealogy info that I have? The children's info would apply to Allie's husband, Joseph Horning, memorial # 132908448. I have information re his parents as well. Thank you~
Just wondering Reason Slack and Margaret Slack of Johnson county, Indiana were possibly the same two that were married in Brown county, Ohio.
From Brown county Ohio marriage book 1816-1850 Page 132 #C-24 Slack, Reason to Margaret, Jolliff 12 Aug 1824 by by Joseph Stableton, JP.

Do you think it's okay to play the Slack children's birth and death places as: Trafalgar, Hensley Twp, Johnson Co, IN?
|Doni Wright||Sarah Peck #92728298|
Hi Cathea, I've made all the changes you requested on Sarah's memorial. The two things I didn't know was that her buried name was "Slack", and the maiden name of her mother.
I mean, how do you post her? Slack - Peck? I did request a photo of her headstone and let them know it was under the name of Slack, and I left her as "Peck" on the memorial. I think that is how people will research her. And, they can always find her by her maiden name.
Again, thanks so much for your brain,
I have transferred his memorial to you per your request.
