From the looks of the phtograph I would say it was taken in the 77th Infantry Division temporary cemetery on Ie Shima, the island off Okinawa where Lt. Van Winkle was killed. As a point of interest he was fatally wounded on the first day of fighting on Ie Shima.I'd like to know the source of the photo too.
At 30, Lt. Van Winkle was older than most infantry officers of his rank would be today even with a few years of service.
Does anyone know any more about him?

Thank you for the picture. It looks like a marker at a temporary military cemetery. Can you tell me the source of the picture? If this picture is not from the Bayview New York Bay Cemetery I am still interested in getting a picture of his grave marker at the cemetery. Once again thank you very much.
