PLEASE CALL ATTENTION TO MY ERRORS AND OMMISSIONS... |
Updates are Welcome! I don't have time to respond to every suggestion, but rest assured that I review requests and update records as soon as I can ... How long did it take You to find the "Edit" button at the top of your contributor page?
March 2014 - Helping transcribe Diuguid Funeral Home records. Currently working on 1905 Cemetery burial "locations".
Requests for Memorial Transfers are welcome if I don't have a particular interest in the person. Don't hesitate to ask!! PLEASE click the "Edit" tab on the memorial, then select "Suggestion..." and enter your request.
Bedford's Longwood Cemetery online cemetery records have used to update F/G Longwood Cemetery Records. There are a number of extra records added with photos and a number of records added by others using other resource material. More photos to come as time, weather and sun position permit. This cemetery is as near to complete as can be done without an independent review.
Bedford's Oakwood Cemetery online cemetery records have been used to update F/G Oakwood Cemetery Records. Elks Rest, (central portion of Section A and and Section B) is complete (with photos), as is the "Crypt" area. Records for the rest of Oakwood Section A have been added. Currently uploading photos and scheduling repeat visits to complete a photo inventory of Section A. Additional online records for further sections are now under review (Jan, 2014) and will be added as time allows.
NOTE; BEDFORD CITY REVERTED TO TOWN STATUS JULY 1, 2013. IF YOU'RE ADDING CEMETERIES, PLEASE SELECT BEDFORD COUNTY. Please do NOT add Bedford City as the City/Town. For deaths - Bedford had city status August 31, 1968 thru June 30, 2013. IMHO the death location between those dates should be Bedford City; not Bedford County, Bedford
If you need to add a new cemetery in Bedford County please check with the Bedford museum to get an existing cemtery name. There are more than 1800 cemetery/burial sites on record with locations/directions to the site. If you don't have GPS coordinates, please take the time to include "location/directions to" in the cemetery description.
If we can't locate a cemetery today, our decendant's will be even more challenged!
Although most of what I contribute to Find A Grave relates to photography, I'm a map sort of person and enjoy the challenge of finding any place in question in Bedford County. You're welcome to contact me with cemetery location questions.
I've found that photographing "Memorials" is an excellent way for me to combine my passion for Photography, the Outdoors, and History.
I'm Bruce Paul, a resident of Bedford County, VA, USA for 30 years.
I started submitting records and photos after traveling country roads, enjoying the scenery while documenting my wife's DOOLEY ancestors who have been here since the early 1800's.
During my ramblings around Bedford County, I became interested in older monuments that were barely legible in Church, Public and family cemeteries...
I have a job that gives me the opportunity to visit many areas that are Posted; No Trespassing... and I use those opportunities to seek out small private cemeteries that would otherwise be left unknown to F/G.
I'm sorry to say that I only speak English. I appreciate updates for any of my submittals in other countries and I'll work with you to to fix my mistakes.
VETERANS - For those that asked - I've completed a review of my cemeteries for VETS and have added them to Virtual Cemeteries. In 2006-09 I didn't keep good records of where I visited and after posting I deleted many of the photos I took, so they're not included. I'll be adding to the VET collection as time goes on..
Note that I don't 'collect' Vet memorials. However, when I come across biographies/photos or take photos where that information is available, I'll add them to my virtual cemeteries. If you have a local Vet that isn't included in my virtual cemeteries, you are welcome to contact me.
ELKS, aka Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks
The Elks National Home was dedicated in 1903 in Bedford. Residents that passed away until 1980 were laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery's, "Elk's Rest" (Oak A & Oak B) and are included in my Elks Virtual Cemetery. June 2013; I'm confident that I have a full inventory...
Please note that VIRGINIA IS NOT A STATE!! (It's a Commonwealth).
Virginia's revised constitution of 1871 during the Reconstruction Period in US History specifies that 'Cities' are independent 'entities'... not part of the surrounding counties
For your best search results, check both cities and surrounding counties. Annexation boundaries change over time and small cities appear and disappear over the years. . .
Sincere and Cheerful Regards!
Last update March 2014.

|Joan Frum||RE: James Selvey Revisited|
James Selvey #105590933
My great grandfather, Homer Selvey, left many little notebooks full of neatly handwritten records of all the Selveys in our line, many of whom were born in Taylor County. I inherited his house last year in Webster, Taylor County, (near Grafton) and found a lot of family documents (and old bibles full of dates) in the attic.
I then found the source below on Ancestry.com which I think is the same man, even though his name appears as James T R Selvey, because the date of birth and both parents match other records for James A Selvey. I have noticed that many records transcribe the middle initials incorrectly. (It might a typo. Do you know what the T R stands for?)
Source: West Virginia, Births Index, 1853-1969:
Name: James T R Selvey
Birth Date: 28 Jan 1884
Birth Place: Taylor, West Virginia
Birth County: Taylor
Father's Name: James W
Mother's name: Sallie E
FHL Film Number: 818659

thanks for the transfer that was very kind and very much appreciated.
|Ann||RE: RE Baby Berry 114154909|
Awesome job, Bruce! I was going by the Diuguid records saying she was buried at Longwood, not Oakwood, and finding a Baby Berry at Longwood. I'll have to send you my "Is this right?" questions for your detective skills!

I have no information for an Adam Alexander Flint. My decendants that I am looking for in or around Rockbridge, VA are Christopher Amos Flint and Polly Dean Flint.
|Ann||RE: Amandus Barnes 14031593|
Sorry about that - I transposed 2 of the numbers. The correct # for John W. is 14031639.

Bruce, thanks for letting me know I hadn't connected him to his parents. I hadn't done his siblings either, so I fixed that. I'm still hunting for 1 sibling but I believe he died before 1910 so I'm not positive I'll find him.
