If you know of any one memorialized here who served aboard the USS Melvin DD-680 in the Pacific Theatre during WW II, please let me know.|
I'm a transplanted New Englander. My parents are Paul Oscar Avery(1921-2003) and Betty Wheaton Avery(1925-1992). My mom's and aunt's interest in family history was passed to me. I have been doing family history research for over 25 years, most of which has been in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine.
I am retired, and live in The Villages, Florida, and would be happy to find and photograph cemetery stones of your friends or family in the Sumter - Lake - Marion County area.
If you find some pictures or monuments I haven't included, I'd love to hear from you when you post them. And corrections or additions to my postings are welcome. All suggestions are responded to within 48 hours unless I am out of town. If you supply me with additional information, I will always research and double check it before posting it to a memorial. There is simply too much inaccurate information out there.
Please use the EDIT button on the memorial to initiate correspondence and recommend updates. I am no longer able to respond to emails that do not provide quick and easy access to the memorial in question. Also, if your e-mail is not provided on your profile page, I won't be able to respond to you if a response is needed. The public messages are not appropriate for back and forth discussion.
Regarding transfers outside guidelines..... I will consider transfer to those who have a proven track record of collaboration on FindAGrave. I have been burned once too many times by new contributors that are subsequently unresponsive. And PLEASE do not demand transfers. If you do, you will be ignored.
I have completed projects on all cemeteries in Hawley, Buckland, Colrain, and Charlemont, Massachusetts. And another in Sears Cemetery in Barnstable County. Current projects include the Jenks Family in Rhode Island, and Shelburne, Franklin Co, Mass cemeteries. If any of my entries connects to your ancestors, let me know.
There are so many "orphan" memorials here on Find-A-Grave, many of which have been posted en masse and then forgotten. So many need identification and linking so we know who they were! I believe that posting a memorial carries with it a duty and responsibility to manage that memorial properly, taking the time to research, identify, and link the memorial properly, along with a willingness to work with others who may also have an interest in that memorial. The vast majority of Find-A-Grave contributors are wonderful collaborators. But, if you add thousands of memorials, be prepared to manage and care for them, and at least have the common courtesy to respond to update/correction requests.

Edits done. Photos added, too. Do you like The Villages? Seems kind of in the middle of nowhere. My husband and drive by every winter on our way to Orlando. Our grandchildren live there.

One of the ways you might be able to gather additional information as to burial is to contact the Steuben County Health Dept. Since Mary died in Steuben Co. in 1911., they might have a death record that indicates place of burial. Records there are digitalized from about 1882 on. It is hit and miss whether a record exists, though, since it wasn't required to file such a report at that time. One can also call the Carnegie Library in Angola IN and ask for the reference dept. They might have an obit already on file or find one for you. Margaret there is a Find A Grave member and photo volunteer, too, so she understands the questions and the research.

|MFC||Joseph & Mary Goodwin|
Dear Mr. Avery:
I claimed the photo request you submitted for Joseph and Mary Goodwin, Mt Zion Cemetery Steuben Co IN. Today I walked twice the part of the cemetery where they should be located (there is an older part and a newer part) and could not find a grave site. Mt Zion is one of those places that has no sections or lots. One must use their intuition and walk and walk. I did, though, find a stone for a Charles and Lorraine Goodwin. Could this possibly be their son? (I created memorials for them both). Relations to you? May I ask what resources you have that place Mary & Joseph at Mt Zion? Any information would be appreciated. I haven't given up yet.

I made the adjustments to her memorial, thanks for bringing that to my attention! Jim

Thanks for bringing the plausibility of her being the correct daughter to my attention. It made me go back and look at it again. This memorial was taken over by a family connection and apparently some bio info was changed. Listed as is is now, I have removed my objection.
thanks again! Marji

I recently found some photos I took about 5 years ago in Deerfield. I added one to Nathaniel's site in case it is easier to read than yours. Delete if not wanted.

Thanks, looks good. I'm slowly going through my Cape Cod families lately to try and link relatives. I'll get back to you if I find any links for Sarah that you don't find.
I appreciate the quick fix.

I have no tie to the person on that memorial...except for close proximity. Please maintain it.
