Bio Photo I am interested in researching JETT/GARRISON families mainly in Iowa/Tennessee/Oklahoma/Missouri/Arkansas/Texas and Virginia and Murphy/Organ/Gorvin families

I WOULD BE HAPPY TO TRANSFER ANY MEMORIAL! Just ask

"Dear Ancestor"

Your tombstone stands among the rest;
Neglected and alone.
The name and date are chiseled out
On polished, marbled stone.

It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist
You died and I was born.

Yet each of us are cells of you
In flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
Entirely not our own.

Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
One hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left
Who would have loved you so.

I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot,
And come to visit you.

Zephaniah Luse at Oakland Cemetery
Hi Bobby,
I'm transcribing Iowa Reed's diary for 1895-96 and she reports a visit from Judge and Mrs Luse, who bought apples. From the info posted on findagrave it appears that although Zephaniah had been a Judge he was not longer working in this capacity in 1895-96. Do you suppose that Iowa might have used Judge as a title of respect for him as late as 1895-96, and that Zephaniah is the person she is referring to in her diary entry? Best wishes, David D

Iowa Byington Reed
On Monday September 1st 1919 Iowa wrote in her diary "Eight years since Mother died and now Will sleeps beside her." Iowa's mother, Mary Byington, is buried at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City and if "beside her" is taken literally Will Reed, Iowa's husband, should be in the grave contiguous to Mary. Iowa presumably would have been placed beside him on the other side in 1936. BTW - Iowa's father, Le Grand Byington, is misidentified in findagrave as Leonard Byington. I'm guessing the headstone is very hard to read.

Iowa Byington Reed and husband Will Reed
Hello Mr Jett. I can't tell from your bio whether you are a resident of Iowa City of thereabouts, but do wish to thank you for posting info about the Whetstones buried at Oakland Cemetery there. Might I prevail upon you to find and photograph the headstones of Will Reed and his wife Iowa who are not yet listed in the findagrave database? I am quite certain they are there. Iowa is the sister of Robert Byington (and others) and the sister of Hattie Whetstone. She is "famous" in an unusual way - she kept a diary for most of her adult life (roughly 1872 to 1936) and the women's archives at the Univ of Iowa Library has placed it online. You would be doing all who read these a great favor by allowing us to place flowers on her memorial if you would create one. Her husband died on 10 December 1918, and she wrote of visiting his grave at Iowa City's cemetery (what is now called Oakland) to place flowers and mourn his passing, so it is fair to assume that she was buried upon her death on 13 February 1936 beside him, and since she was a Byington I suspect they rest in or very near the Byington Plot. Thank you for your kind attention to this task. It's time to honor her memory.
