How to find oldest graves: (Thanks to MikeMaxton)

1) Begin a new search
2) In the last name field, enter 123.
3) Check the box for "Do partial name search on surname".
(NOTE: What this does is give you ALL last names. But it will time out and never return results unless you greatly narrow the records it will look at. So, we'll narrow it to a state and a county.)
4) Choose BORN BEFORE 1840.
5) Choose DIED AFTER 1400.
These are a little counter-intuitive. The death year after 1400 (you can vary this some, if you like) is EXCLUDING all the unknown death years. But if we just did those death years, we would be looking at hundreds of thousands of records, so we narrow it further by adding BORN BEFORE 1840. If you are looking at a County that is very old, you may want to narrow the search even further by changing to BORN BEFORE 1820 or older.
6) Choose a State and a County. You can't do the complete US or a state, in most cases. Your query will time out before you get any results.
7) Choose order by death date.

If you haven't over-loaded the servers, you'll get a result in about 60 seconds.

RE: Chewton Cemetery
Hi Edwin,

I am not sure if I can help you in the short term regarding this request.

Over the past twelve months I have travelled past the Chewton cemetery a couple of times whilst working in Western Victoria.

However, since I live more than two and a half hours drive by car from Chewton cemetery it will be a while before I return there. This is not to say that I won't be visiting Chewton at a later date.

In the short term it might be worth contacting the family history group at Chewton. They are very helpful and only minutes from the cemetery. Their web address is www.chewton.net

My mother indicated that she knew of the surname Ridout in the Box Hill area when she was at school. Could they also be your relatives?
Best of luck.
Colin

RE: Fort Hill Cemetery, and Robert Townsend
Good idea. I put the Ft Hill Cemetery plaque on Robert Townsend's find a grave memorial. Thanks for the suggestion.

RE: Edith Piaf
Thank you Edwin. Certainly you had the privilege of knowing a great cemetery with all the art of the best French sculptors and full of personalities from all walks. Best regards.

RE: Suggest a correction: Moncure Robinson
The memorial plaque picture could be added to his Findagrave page in Laurel Hill, and then the memorial plaque listing actually should be deleted.

Howdy -

Thank you for pointing this out. I have amended the birthdate on his Findagrave memorial.

BTW, what you have for him in Virginia is not a cenotaph. A cenotaph is a monument that marks an empty in-ground grave site. What you have for him is a memorial plaque.
