A GRAVEYARD'S RAMBLE

I took a stroll in the graveyard
One bleak November day,
When the skies were dull and leaden
And all around looked gray,
And gloomy, so my thoughts were;
I felt in a pensive mood
And sought a lonely hour
That I might think and brood.

It was very still and silent
Not a living soul was seen,
And all alone I wandered
Through the narrow paths,
Between the marble head stones
And monuments so grand,
They looked like ghastly sentinels
Guarding the sleeping band

There stood a massive granite shaft
That towered up so high
It seemed to say 'neath it
No common form could lie;
A magnate's name I read,
And knew him through hearsay;
I wondered if his body
Became a high graded clay

What wealth I saw about me
In these cold well chiseled stones;
The sculptor's grandest masterpieces
Is raised o'er rich men's bones;
Oh! What a sham and mockery
The poor, that man oppressed
And filled his coffers from the blood
Of starved - let him rest.

I passed along and then I came
To a lone neglected spot,
Where weeds had grown and read
"Here lie my bones to rot.
No name, no deed recorded;
Naught else could be seen
But I felt that, that unknown one
Had been somewhat like me.

Soon my three scores years and ten
Will pass, I will lie
Beneath the sod forgotten,
But little will care I
If my God to my soul mercy
Will show 'twill matter not.
I'll choose this crude inscription:
"Here lie my bones to rot."

Correction on burial location. It will be at Temple Emanu-El on the East side of New York at the request of Joan. This came from her notes our of her book. She has also requested a red carpet funeral.

RE: Vincent Bedell
Please forgive me for not responding sooner. I do not know how the cemetery is organized (sections, rows, grave numbers, etc.) I can tell you that his gravesite is near the Springdale Avenue fence.

Since I have several relatives buried at Delaware Cemetery in Pike County, I really appreciate the memorials you've added. I just sent edits Alice Whittaker Hornbeck and her husband Daniel, my great grand aunt and uncle. Thanks for your time and contributions.
