I have long, long connections with Wilkes County, NC. I grew up in upper Virginia, the D.C. area to be exact, and would visit here from time to time with my dad, who was born in Wilkes County. In 1967, we moved to CA and I married in 1970 and moved to Oregon where I lived until 2000. At that time, I moved back to CA to help with my parents. Each year, we would visit during late September/early October for family reunions and about two years ago, daddy and mother were getting tired of things in CA in the Bay Area and started thinking about moving. We looked at property in Wilkes County and last September found the home we now live in. We moved from CA to "home" and the moving van pulled up on Dec. 26 of 2007 and in we moved! We are glad to be home among family and friends and while I have never lived here before, it feels like home since my roots go back to the 1770's here and I feel like I know all there is to know about Wilkes (which, I'm sure, is not true!) But, here I am and since I am caregiver for my 90-year old dad and 85-year old mother, (who has since passed away on June 11 2009), I don't work and have some free time on my hands. I am going to attempt to photograph Wilkes County cemeteries over time and since findagrave was so helpful to me, I am happy to be able to add to the lists. I am willing to help with questions and answers about Wilkes cemeteries and history, but cannot guarantee I will do it in "your time". lol I love this website and appreciate all the great contributors.

Roy Clyde Church
I had based the cemetery on the following record:
U.S. Veterans Gravesites, ca.1775-2006
Name: Roy Clyde Church
Service Info.: S1 US NAVY WORLD WAR II
Birth Date: 17 Mar 1926
Death Date: 13 Apr 2003
Cemetery: Church Family Cemetery
Cemetery Address: North Wilkesboro, NC 28656

I must have selected the wrong Church Family Cemetery. I have changed it to the one you suggested and I see that you have created memorials for his parents also today. I also linked him to your new memorials.

Thank you for the grave photos for Roy Clyde Church. I have been trying to locate the men who served with my dad in USS LCT (6) GROUP #81, FLOTILLA #27 during World War II in the Pacific and he is one of them.

Ace Finley Byers
I'm looking for further information on Ace Finley Byers, also known as Asa Finley Byers. Needing to know how the information on the page where his gravestone photo is was obtained. The information I am speaking of is his fathers name...I haven't been able to locate any such document showing that James Byers was Ace Finley Byers father. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! Also, if someone has the Byers line traced back further than James Byers!

Thank you!

Jane C Lowe
I noted you said she was not married. I wonder where you found that documentation? Most genealogy charts indicate she was married to Edmund C Edsel and had one son, Richard Martin Edsel.

I do not agree with this chart and believe that you are correct and that Nancy M Lowe Edsel was the mother of Richard Martin Edsel. I would love some comments on this matter as I am trying to ferret out the truth of this relationship? Anyone have any documentation of either parentage? Would love to hear from you. Bill Edsel at

Maggie Hood Condrey Craig
I found since my previous email that she seems to have had a prior marriage to a George Logan Condrey who died on 2/5/74. Her second marriage seems to have been later in life and about two years before her second husband died. Thanks so much. No rush.

how do you check other burials in this cemetery?
I have a Maggie Sylvestor Hood married to Eugene Anderson Craig. I have records showing SHE died in Wilkes County and records showing HE was buried at a Full Gospel Cemetery but there is no such cemetery in Lenoir (so says a Find A Grave volunteer in that county). Who do I contact to check to see if both are buried in this cemetery and take photos if they are there? Could you do it please or tell me what other e-mail address at Find A Grave to send a request to?

I show:

Maggie Sylvestor Hood
Birth 6 Oct 1909 in Caldwell County, NC, USA
Death 25 Sep 1997 in North Wilkesboro, Wilkes, NC, USA

Eugene Anderson Craig
Birth 10 Jun 1910 in Lenoir, Caldwell, NC, USA
Death 5 Jan 1988 in Lenoir, Caldwell, NC, USA

As you can see, she died in this county. He did not. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks for all you do for so many through volunteering at Find A Grave. I appreciate it very much.
