Mary Bowles Yates
Seasons Greetings Mr. De Mallie;

I hope you are in accordance with me adding a photograph of Erin Hill to Mrs. Yates entry. I took the opportunity to photograph it in 2014, and since you mentioned it with such regard I thought it appropriate. Of course the order can be altered.

Best Wishes,

George Seitz

county w/ 2 county seats
Jones Co, Mississippi has 2 county seats---Laurel & Ellisville. When formed into the 1800s, it was very backwoods, literally. The seat was moved to a larger town in its early days. Travel was inconvenient from the outer edges to get to the new larger town. They decided to keep the old & the new, & it continues still.
Much of my family history took place there.

RE: William Franklin Harvie
John Harvie Jr's (20 Dec 1706 - 3 Dec 1767) oldest son Daniel and his wife Sarah "Sallie" Talliaferro are my 5X grandparents.
I am descended down from their daughter Sarah Harvey (1780-1846) and her husband John McGee,
their son Peter McGee (1807-1880) and his wife Judy Lively,
their daughter Elizabeth McGee (1826-1899) and her husband John Calvin "Rebel John" Ballard,
their son Joel Ballard (1851-1932) and his second wife Virginia Margaret Allen,
their daughter Mary Ballard (1891-1981) and her husband Royal Sweeney,
their daughter Ada Marie (1921-2010) and her husband Ernest Brown were my parents.
Those family names are still common in southwestern WV where I live.

Since Daniel was born in March 1742, before John Jr & Martha Gaines were legally married in Oct 1742, I guess they named him after her father to keep peace in the family. I am puzzled by his delay to marry so late in life, most of my ancestors were married somewhere between 13 and 23, as was the case for Martha. It would not surprise me to find someday that he had an earlier wife & family in Scotland.

Through John Calvin Ballard, I have a second branch of Harveys on my tree (and I have found no connection between the two) that goes all the way back to one John Harvey (1630-1679) of Staffordshire, England who md Dorothy Mary Tooke of Accomack, VA. That entire line spells the last name Harvey. No "ie" anywhere.

I have not been to the portion of VA where William lived, but I have been over to the area where the Belmont estate belonging to John Harvie, Jr & the adjoining estates of Edgehill & Shadwell once were. Montecello appears to be the only one left intact.

I had never heard that about T Jefferson. He must have been very polite, or too tired, not to have told them the president needed a seat. Talk about 'servant of the people'. Shame we don't have manners anymore, just political correctness.

My dad's lineage goes back through the Brown-Foster-Hughes-Grigsby line to "Mary" Wahanganoche, daughter of Chief Wahanganoche of the Patawomeck tribe. I have heard Pocahontas is also somewhere in his ancestry through the Christian Petty family and Ka-Okee, but that could be just family lore.

I'd be curious to know what drew so many of John Harvie Jr's children to want to move to Georgia, other than that their mother & sister were there. Even Daniel, who had lived in beautiful Monroe County (now in WV) for many years, up and bought land there at age 52. He was still working at clearing the land to build a home, when he died of exertion after fishing. Too old & fat I suppose. He weighed over 400 pounds. Sallie moved to Augusta County, VA where she died 2 years later.

Thanks for writing & Happy Hunting!

William Franklin Harvie
My computer will not allow me to use the newly infuriating "I am not a robot" feature to send certain edits. You have William as being born in 1769. That is 2 years after his father died. My records show he was born Feb 12, 1761. Everything else looks good except that his father was not Col. John Harvie...that was one of his brothers who is buried in the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, VA. His father, and the father of Col. John Harvie, was simply John Harvie Jr, of Gargunnock, Scotland. John Jr was the son of John Sr & Margaret Kay of Scotland.

Relations to William Dabney Abbott

I noticed that you left flowers as well as a message on William Dabney Abbott's grave and was wondering if you were related to him? He's my 2nd great grandfather and I'm still trying to learn more information on him. Would you happen to have any photos or any additional information on him? I would appreciate it, thanks!
