Bio Photo (John C. Carter)

(Will be spending part of the summer in southwestern Maine).

Happy to photograph at any cemetery in the Tampa Bay, FL area! (or in the Lakes Region of SW Maine).

Born in Dover, DE, (to parents from NJ & WV), I lived in southern CA until age 12, & then in Raton, (a small town in N.E. New Mexico), which I consider my home town. I attended NM State Univ for 4 years (with a 1-yr exchange to Oregon State Univ), but did not complete a degree at that time, & later moved back to southern CA, settling in the Orange County area. After 10 yrs in the O.C., I moved to St. Petersburg, FL (Tampa Bay area) in 1990, & have been here ever since.

I have avidly worked on my family's genealogy since the age of 15 ... 41 years ago!

I am a member (and former chapter registrar) of the SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) with 7 qualifying ancestors submitted (more to come!), a member of the SUVCW (Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War) with 10 qualifying ancestors or brothers of ancestors (more to come!), a member of the SVR (Sons of Veterans Reserve--affiliated with the SUVCW), a member of the S&DUSCT (Sons & Daughters of U.S. Colored Troops), a member of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indians of New Jersey, and an associate member of the Lenape Indian Tribe of Delaware.

(Click on my profile pic above to read the story of the Civil War ancestor whose headstone I'm posing with).

I'm very proud that every single branch of my ancestry has been in America since at least pre-Revolutionary times.

Having taken numerous college courses over the years, I finally bit the bullet & enrolled in a program in 2003 to complete my degree, & graduated from Eckerd College (a local, private, liberal arts college) in May 2005 with a B.A. in Creative Writing.

Besides genealogy & writing, my other interests include: clock collecting, books, movies, photography, the Civil War, the space program, many types of music, & visiting cemeteries!

Thanks to the creators of this site for doing such a great job!

RE: Your Edit Suggesion
Hi John, My cousin has a copy of a deed that has Dennis Trammell and his wife Mary selling the land of her father Samuel Baker. I will try and get more information from her tomorrow. Keep the question mark if you prefer until I can give you the proof.
Sincerely, Judy

RE: Hensley Cemetery clarification
John, I have only heard of 3 Hensley Cemeteries in the Harlan, but only know one of them very well. That is the one on Martins Fork, Smith, Harlan, KY. I have heard there is one in Cawood, KY which is just next door practically, to Smith, but I have not seen or documented it. The other one I have heard of is the Speed Hensley Cemetery, of which I know nothing about either. It does get very confusing from the obits. They are not always clear or correct on the location. If you are interested, send me a specific name and I will try to find out more for you. You can email me at

RE: Lydia Burton Johnson
Lydia was a friend of my family on my Mother's side. I spent summers in Harrington Delaware and knew Lydia and her sisters. My Mothers best friend was Hazel Johnson. Thanks for the offer though. Ray
