The book of life is brief,|
And once the pages read,
All but love is dead:
That is my belief. [Bobby Goldsboro, 1960s]
I periodically notice while updating my own family memorials that some awesome volunteers have added pictures I did not request ~ probably thinking I'll get to visit and take some myself sooner or later; I'll gratefully send you a message whenever I stumble into this happy experience!
I have a habit of taking shots of even totally unreadable markers in hopes that a digital picture will reveal something...ANYthing. When even partially successful, I'm happy to share with others what little I was able to decipher. We (whatever couple or group of us on any given search) also attempt to clean off markers, usually finding that what looks like simply dirt is calcium/mineral deposits or other permanent external adhesions...on top of various lichens...which humans should not even breathe, but we do what we can within regulations.
My grandson V-Dawg partly learned to read by searching for letters on grave stones. He's the one who gets down on his knees and lovingly blows away debris after he's brushed off ground markers as well as he can. What...you thought GreatGramma did it all by herself?! EEHA...blessed to be able to when I have to, but better results come from the two of us together, and I look forward to the time he'll be the one to take the pictures, too...which he has already told me he wants to do.
Whether members have posted a memo like this or not, unless they HAVE stated that they waive their rights, the vast majority of pictures posted on FindAGrave have copyrights which did NOT change with the sale of FindAGrave.com to Ancestry.com because they belong to individuals, not the company of FindAGrave.com and/or Ancestry.com. You and I still own what we have always owned until WE choose to give up same. You can use pictures I've taken and posted on this site in your online family trees by making a connective link to the original and/or including "© FindAGrave member #46897564"; none may be sold and/or exchanged for any type of payment.
Oppositely, do not ask me to add biographies and/or obituaries to memorials I have made unless you own the copyrights for same. (I THINK) FindAGrave's rules are now saying I cannot even repost jpeg obituaries I have paid for (and are not scans, photographs, or screenshots that I know of) so, as all of us are responsible to be both polite and respect the legal rights of writing &/or pictures we add ANYwhere, I will not.
FindAGrave's rules and regulations, found here ~ FindAGrave FAQs ~ admonish, among else:
>> ONLY post photos for which YOU hold the copyright (meaning photos you took)!!!

Whew...I hope that covers your questions/comments on related issues for now, and I can remove most of that before long ~ :^)
When I'm not working on my own family genealogy, I'm freely available and happy to help anyone track missing dead and have done so 1000+ times; in >a dozen years, there have been just four people for whom I could find zilch-zip-nada-nothing. Just "public message" me any known details of the unlocated.
No reason to read below as I only tell my personal reasons for being on FindAGrave:
I oversaw the newsletter of Colonel David Hackworth, military author/ commentator/ columnist with 8 Purple Hearts, for several years until he died while my husband ~ who, BTW, hates cemeteries and has much more important things to do, like saving the lives of over 3000 people striving for a mid-east democracy, than be on FindAGrave ~ was off in a war zone; at which time I needed a new focus and determined to pin-point military ancestors ~ our own 28+ RevWar Patriots and others God lays on my heart.
So, at the on-set in 2005, I was first able to find basic facts of the missing James Powell from Wes' family ~ his grandmother's grandfather ~ with the help of a Maine historical society, and began a two-year mission to restore his legacy which was lost upon his death at Shiloh 145 years ago today as I write this 06APRIL2007.
My biggest peeve in research was seeing my favorite greatgrandmother constantly referred to as "Mrs. G.: husband's first initial and married name" ~ most ALL females losing their identities up into the 1960s; so I'm elated whenever I successfully work the puzzles ~ better than word math, sudoku, or cryptograms ~ of finding and posting ladies' maiden names as the most appropriate and long-lasting "flowers" to their memories.
