Knickmeyers and O'Neales
(Sorry, I posted before I was finished.) On the night of February 26th, 1898 a terrible fire gutted a building at 160 Church Street located at the Southeast corner of Church and Cumberland. it was just a standard 3-story wood frame tenement building commonly seen in this time period and could easily be replaced. What could not be replaced were the nine people who perished in the flames. Nine people of the same family... the Knickmeyer Family.

Those who died were Mrs Rebecca Knickmeyer aged 36, Josephine Knickmeyer aged 17, Katie Knickmeyer aged 15, Leonora Knickmeyer aged 8, Francis Knickmeyer aged 6, Lilly Knickmeyer aged 3, Anna Knickmeyer aged 1 month, Albert O'Neale aged 17, and Caswell O'Neale aged 15, both brothers of Rebecca. Mr. W.T. O'Neale, father of Mrs Rebecca was able to escape the inferno with minimal injuries.

The father Theodore Knickmeyer, a carpenter by trade, was working his job... that job was a fireman with the Charleston Fire Department. He responded with the thought that the fire was near his home. Unbeknownst to him the fire was in fact in his apartment.

He arrived to the horror of fire roaring from the third floor windows. His family nowhere to be seen. He grabbed a ladder and rushed up the wall to the third floor. He frantically swept the room for any sign of his family. He quickly found his infant daughter Anna, not barely a month old. He exited the window and scaled down to the ground. He thought to himself "She is alive, I know it!" At the bottom her looked down at her, his heart sank. He had seen this before at other jobs. She lay lifeless with smoke stains around her mouth and nose not breathing... she could not be saved.

The family was brought out one by one and removed to the bakery across the street from the scene. This business belonged to Fire Chief O.G. Marjenhoff and his family lived above the workings.

The funeral was held the next day at Bethany German Cemetery and the nine were laid to rest in three separate graves.

Afterwards Theodore moved permanently into the fire station at Meeting and Wentworth. A few years later he would move to Augusta, Georgia. A few more after that he moved back to the Lowcountry, this time settling in Goose Creek Township. He would pass away on April 27th, 1920 having never remarried. He is buried in Strawberry.
