If you see a butterfly in the flowers and notes section, the information on that memorial came from a death certificate.

If you send an email be sure to put findagrave in the subject line. Sometimes mail lands in the spam box. Anything that lands in SPAM is automatically deleted without opening.

Please DO NOT post photos of obituaries on my memorial pages. If you send me the info I will be glad to post it as long as you give me source and date of the article. If you do not want to type it, send me a photo copy and I will type it.
Per findagrave guidelines "Similarly, you may NOT scan an obituary and add it as a photograph to a memorial record."

PLEASE, PLEASE use the edit tab in the upper right of the memorial page, click on the appropriate selection and fill in the blanks or select suggest a correction and make your comment, suggestion, transfer request etc. This makes it easier for you and me.

A number of memorials in Saranac Cemetery in Saranac, Michigan have been transferred to me. If you have any additional info about any of these I will be glad to transfer them.

About Gloria Whitehurst in Blackwater Baptist Church cemetery in Virginia Beach, VA

I copied this from the VA Pilot. Since your name was on her page in Find-a-Grave, I presume you would be the one to post it. Let me know if there is another avenue to take to have Gloria updated.
Thank you,
Stephanie Highsmith
p.s. I can also submit a photo if needed. Just let me know.

Gloria S. Whitehurst Obituary

Gloria S. Whitehurst

Virginia Beach - Gloria Spruill Whitehurst, 76, died September 27, 2015. Gloria was born in Princess Anne County to the late Solomon and Martha Craddock Spruill. She was predeceased by son, Robert.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 58 years, P.J. Whitehurst, Jr.; daughter, Paula Knight (Barry); son, Randolph Whitehurst; grandsons, Hunter, Kyle and Forrest Knight; and brother, Harold Lloyd Spruill (Blanche)

Gloria was a faithful, lifelong member , Sunday school teacher and pianist at Blackwater Baptist Church. She also taught piano to many for over 40 years and she taught music to many children at Knotts Island Elementary School.

She loved her family oh so much, especially her grandsons. When they were little, they spent many a day/night at her house. They loved going there cause she and grandpa spent many hours playing games and cards with them.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Chesapeake from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 am at Blackwater Baptist Church with Dr. Lynn Hardaway officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Blackwater Baptist Church. Condolences may be expressed to the family at

RE: Van Story
Thanks Dottie. It looks like I have the wrong Hilda! FWIW Hilda Owens marriage certificate (transcript) identifies her husband as "Story" and the 1940 census says "Story" but the 1930 census says "Vans Story".

Thank you for trying to find the headstone for us. To now know that none exists is also important.

trying to find a grave
Hi Dottie,

My name is Denise Cummings. I am trying to find the grave of my great grandfather William H Cummings. I have his death certificate which says he is in Forest Lawn, Norfolk Va. but I can not find it. I am new to this site so maybe I am just missing it somehow, although I did find some of his children. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you

I was so surprised to see my father's marker yesterday, that I didn't notice his date of birth. Would you please change it to August 17, 1919?

Thanks again for all you do.
