William Allen Van Wormer
LYoung,

I see in your find-a-grave posting for William Allen Van Wormer (husband of Sarah Haswell) that you have listed his birthplace as Williams County, Ohio. I have to ask to what source do you have to document this birthplace for William? The census records from 1860, 1880, 1900, and 1920 all list William's birthplace as Pennsylvania with both parents listed as born in Pennsylvania.

I would truly appreciate if you can share your source for William's birthplace. He was my 4th great-grandfather.

Sincerely,

Tim

Thank you for the beautiful picture of his grave. I never got to meet my mother's brother. He was murdered while on duty in Orange, Texas and was thought to be AWOL. A few days later, one of the big Navy ships dislodged his body. His gun strap had been tied around his body which was in bad shape due to the fish. Virgil was cremated and brought home. Unfortunately, he had become Catholic during this time (did not inform the powers that be) and cremation was frowned at that time. Also, in his belongings, was his fiancee's ballet shoes...which were returned to her. Never was told her name. And the last bit....Virgil lied about his birth year. He was born in 1931 joined the Navy in 1948 at the age of 17.

Again, thank you. I have been many times, even taken a picture, but yours is so simple and elegant. I know my mother and her siblings are smiling down on you! 😇
