Amateur genealogy interest.... I also contribute memorials & grave photos, mostly in my home area of southern Saratoga County, NY. |
If my work has helped you, please leave me a message here.
You may use any photo or data I have posted for personal genealogy research. Please just cite the associated Findagrave memorial number.
Most of the memorials I manage are not from own family tree, so I will generally transfer a memorial to anyone who is knowledgeable about the person and wants to take responsible ownership. Just ask... (please use the link EDIT -> "Suggest any other correction or addition").
These family names are in my tree:

Dan, I was just looking at this cemetery for relatives. It's so sad to see old cemeteries left and forgotten. Just wanted to say thank you for all your work. I try to document and take photos of the old cemeteries where I live Vernon County Wisconsin. Thanks again.

Thanks for the prompt transfer.

You are very welcome. I just wanted to mention that there are two Dutchess markers next to that of Marion and Kenneth Beicke. They are Elmer & Amelia and John & Ruth. I have those photos also if that is something you are interested in.

Any idea what the cemetery mentioned in the linked article was? I don't think I've yet seen mention of it anywhere else.

Could be. The map appears to show some bridges over a creek - I didn't go that far into the woods to see if there's any sign of them. The land back there seemed to drop off from the main section of the cemetery quite a bit. It might've been challenging to develop. I doubt if the 900+ bodies were spread over the whole area.

Were the plots and roads actually laid out for the Cohoes part, or was that just a proposal I wonder? What's the significance of Section A 5, 6, 8, 10 being white - did Cohoes not buy those?
"The cemetery committee reported that it had caused to be removed 981 bodies from the old city cemetery; that 949 had been reinterred at Crescent, thirteen at Oakwood, twelve at Waterford and seven at Albany Rural. The cost of removal was $2,044.45. There are still three bodies in the old plat. The report was accepted."
"The Old Cemetery." Troy Daily Times. February 17, 1897: 4 col 4.
"My search for information has shown that ultimately 981 bodies were exhumed and 3 left behind. Of the 981, 40 could be identified. Of that 40, 13 went to Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, 12 to Waterford Rural Cemetery, 7 to Albany Rural Cemetery and 8 to Union Cemetery in Crescent. It has to be my assumption then that 941 bodies were given a mass burial in the Crescent cemetery.
"As a postscript, and to compound this depressing tale, in 1968 the Union Cemetery Board of Trustees notified Mayor James McDonald that the City of Cohoes was behind in the payment of their annual upkeep annuity of twenty-two dollars for minimal maintenance. The City had been negligent since 1952. The Mayor's response was: 'I can't see why we should pay this money annually when we aren't getting any use of it.'

"Tom Ballard, President of Union Cemetery in Crescent stated that the City of Cohoes owns about an acre and half adjacent to Union Cemetery, which is not being maintained. Asking at this time to have someone clean up the area."

"we live in one of the houses very near the [Cohoes West End] park. One day a few years back I was doing some landscaping in the back yard. I was removing an old slate walk way and replacing it with grass when I unearthed a very old headstone and then a second headstone shortly after. The stones had once marked the graves of 2 small children, one 5yrs and one 21 months.
"Curious as to whether we resided on an old cemetery, we contacted our local historian. What we found out was quite an amazing story. This park, known as West End Park, in 1846 was the Cohoes Company Cemetery!"

|Carol Werner||RE: Lois Rix|
The stone was engraved with the incorrect year. The executrix said the person adding the date to the stone made the error and was going to call him to fix it. I'm not sure if the year can be changed from 2009 to 2008 on the stone or if a whole new stone would have to be done. It is still not fixed. The date was carved with the year my mother was buried, not the date she died. Her body had gone to the Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY after her death to be used for scientific research, and that's why she was buried a year later.
If you need to verify the date of death as 2008, you can look for the name Lois T. Rix on the Social Security Death Index on Ancestry.com
Thank you for your help.
Dan. Could you tell me what year Durkee did the transcriptions for the above?
