The Recording of a Cemetery|
BY THELMA GREENE REAGAN
Today we walked where others walked
On a lonely, windswept hill;
Today we talked where other cried
For Loved Ones whose lives are stilled.
Today our hearts were touched
By graves of tiny babies;
Snatched from the arms of loving kin,
In the heartbreak of the ages.
Today we saw where the grandparents lay
In the last sleep of their time;
Lying under the trees and clouds -
Their beds kissed by the sun and wind.
Today we wondered about an unmarked spot;
Who lies beneath this hollowed ground?
Was it a babe, child, young or old?
No indication could be found.
Today we saw where Mom and Dad lay.
We had been here once before
On a day we'd all like to forget,
But will remember forever more.
Today we recorded for kith and kin
The graves of ancestors past;
To be preserved for generations hence,
A record we hope will last.
Cherish it, my friend; preserve it, my friend,
For stones sometimes crumble to dust
And generations of folks yet to come
Will be grateful for your trust.

I have noticed all of your wonderful work on Find a Grave, thank you so much! You have really helped so many of us! I was delighted to find my great-grandparents memorials under your management and was wondering would you kindly transfer management to me? The info is as follows:

Know it is very late in coming, but wanted to say thanks for adding the headstone photo to the memorial for John Vaughn in the Jumpertown cemetery near Booneville, MS. He is my ggf.

Thank you so much. You actually told me something I hadn't realized or remembered. I had assumed that she died instantly at home. Her mother died April 8, 2009 in Louisville, KY and was buried at Campbellsville Memorial Gardens, Campbellsville, KY. Her father lives in Campbellsville. Thanks again for your work.

Would so love it if you or someone who adds grave info for Thaxton cemetery and visits it could add the grave info for Mary Ellen Harris. She was the young daughter of Charles Edward Harris and Annie Clyde Matkins Harris (who was the daughter of William Walter Matkins and Ollie Roxie Castleberry Matkins). I don't have birth and death dates. I understand her grave is surrounded by other Matkins family members. All of Mary Ellen's family members now live far away. I am a first cousin of hers. Thanks much if you can do this.

Thanks for noticing the duplicate.
I deleted the one I created after making several links to the original memorial.

I've given it some thought. Since the cemetery books were done in the mid-1970's and their stone is listed there, I suspect that they had bought a stone in some advance planning. Then 10-years or so later when he died, she either forgot the stone was there or had it moved to Clear Creek. I have a friend in Oxford who's going to go see if the original stone is still there. Anyway, I'm glad to have it straightened out. I hate to leave mistakes lying around. Thanks for discovering it.
