|Sheila||"Edits" tab on home page|
HI - I'm doing a quick survey of about 400 people on my friends list just to see how many are aware of the new "Edits" tab on their home page. If you could just shoot me back a brief response, either way that would be great. Thanks.

Col. N. H. Gates was an attorney and business owner in Marysville, California in 1848. He earned a law degree from a college in Chillicothe, Ohio in the late 1820's- early 1830's. He went to Fort Vancouver to meet his family in 1852 and then settled in Portland, Oregon for 18 months, owning a hotel. He then moved to Cascade (now Cascade Locks) on the Washington side of the Columbia. He moved his family to The Dalles, Oregon in 1855 due to the Indian uprising in the area. He practiced law, owned a wagon building business, a bar, and a hotel. The hotel and his home still stand. Mary "Polly" Gates died in Sept. 1868. Sarah died in 1862 and Lydia died in 1864. Bill Gates died in 1925. Col. Gates was Speaker of tne House for Oregon Territory in 1857. He was very involved politically in The Dalles, Wasco County, And the state of Oregon. My husband is from the "2nd" family of Col. Gates by way of his last child, Nathanial Holley Gates, Jr. My information is from my own research and what has been passed down through the generations.
Best, Cheryl Gates

Thank you so much for this info. My husband is the gr-gr-grandson of Col. N. H. Gates who was married to Mary Koontz at the time. He came west a few years earlier. I would like to know where I can purchase a copy of this book. Again, thank you.
Best, Cheryl Gates
|Chad Daniel||David Koontz additions|
Hello Dennis. You sent me two emails regarding updates for David Koontz, of which I have attempted to add. I am fairly new to the findagrave project so I hope you will find they have worked correctly.
I was excited to see your email, knowing that someone has linked David to his family. I have known of this grave since I was a child. While I was just beginning to use this website, and finding some very helpful information in my own genealogy lines, I decided to add this local grave. I feared no one would ever think to add it, being somewhat forgotten and in a very small town.
Thanks for taking the time to email me and keep up the good work.

You are certainly welcome!
I tried to get the rest of the family group while I was there.
There is some confusion concerning the identity of the baby (memorials # 90745233, 90745257 & 53986172) -- the grave is directly behind the grave for Alleen & Verna (who share a marker) and adjacent to that for Edythe (Koontz) Drinkard and her husband James. It is listed in the "official" listing of the cemetery (http://www.usgennet.org/usa/or/town/lebanon/cems/pinegrove/pgcemintro.html) under three names/ plots, but there is only one grave marker. The assignment of plot numbers seems to be quite arbitrary, so that does not help at all. I did not find the child in the Oregon Death Index under either name.

I have linked him to his father per your request. Thank you for the information.
Your information was added to Elizabeth Koontz's memorial. Do you have links to her parent's graves?

Thank you very much for a fantastic site. I found a very much information here that I did not know. However I see that you have mixed the birtdate/year for Marit and her elder sister with the same name. Marit who married Theodore was born 13. sept. 1881. Marit the elder was born 1. jan. 1872 and died 6. sept. 1883, Rennebu, Norway.
If you are interested I have information about Theodore and his family. They all came to America too. I also have more information about Marits ancestors and family here.
My mail adress is: firstname.lastname@example.org
Best regards Inger Bjørnaas, Rennebu
