Bio Photo I'm glad this site is here to help preserve the history which is rapidly disappearing. I enjoy helping someone out who may not be able to make it to beautiful Southern Illinois themself. Happy hunting to everyone! Steph

Copy Photo?
May I copy the headstone photos for Peter and Sarah Wisely for my personal files? They are my 3g grandparents. #111701570 and 111701412. Thank you for photographing these and helping to preserve history. Do you happen to know what the verses say on the bottom? If not, that's ok, I will just have an excuse for a road trip. RE: Mathew Sproul
Steph -

My what a story! I could see this all evolving for you. I had to chuckle at "people not understanding". I always wanted to be an archeologist until I almost flunked chemistry in high school. You have to have Chemistry to be an archeologist. I didn't want to work with dead bodies tho! It was the people and their lives that interested me. I am trying to find new information from other members of the Sproul family, who are all on the Matthew and Harriet's side. I would very much like to meet you and talk. Maybe we can walk the Coulterville cemetery together. I hope I reach you? May email is woodsma1948@yahoo.com. I live in Marion, Illinois. Thank you again for you kindness in writing to me and your willingness to help me. I promised Mathew that I would find him before I died and put a stone on his grave, if he didn't have one.

RE: Mathew Sproul
Steph,
Thank you for writing. I am so bitterly disappointed. The family story was that he was buried without a marker 'cause he was an ornery old Scot!! Could some of these graves have sunken markers? Is it hopeless? How do we know Mathew is buried there at all? Is there a record with his name on it but not the location?

I told all of my family and the extended Sproul's from the other brothers that I had found him. OOPS!

I admire your hard work and dedication to it. You must be a very special carring woman. If I come to Coulterville in the future I would like to meet you. Maybe we could have coffee or a coke together and talk.

Thanks again for writing,
Mary

Swanwick family cemetery photos
I am delighted to see that you added photos of grave markers and the area of the Swanwick family cemetery. These people were my husband's 3X greatgrandparents and siblings of his 2X greatgrandfather. We have been in that area, but don't know where this cemetery is, and don't know whom to ask. My husband's aunt had been there, but she is now deceased.
Please, if you would, respond back to me at nswanwick04@gmail.com and give me directions to this cemetery. We live in southeast Kansas, but I know we'll make the trip back to see these markers. We were in Chester last spring, seeing more Swanwick, Conn, and Morrison graves at the cemetery there.

Close but no cigar. The stone you found could be a part of the family of the guy I a looking for but I don't think its my guy.

As far as his military service this is what I know: 2nd Lt. Thomas Alexander Co I Unit 11 ILL US INF Civil war officer.

So if the stone does say 80 Ill then it isn't the correct male.

Thanks for your work. But apparently the mystery continues.

Hey! Stephanie

Just thought I'd touch base with you.
Have they been able to dig out that one stone you mentioned? Boy! I'll tell you if you find him we'll be one most appreciative family. But all who culd tell us anything about him is gone now. So it's up to me & my sister to find him. Hope to hear from you one way or the other. Take care & God bless.
